~ the last words ~
The site announced its own death better than any reporter did, so start there. "The site was not born in a big bang, but in a whisper," the farewell page says. In June 1998 Yael, a psychology student, and Oren Izmirli, a computer science student, were a couple with two different skills between them. He had been learning how to build pages. She could write. The Israeli internet was, in their words, about as young as they were, and almost without noticing they put up the first Hebrew site that existed only to review films. Hebrew film reviews had been published online before. They had always been a section inside something bigger.
What it actually read like was a blog wearing a film section's clothes. The reviews carried her life alongside the films, which in 1998 was not yet a genre with a name. In 2002 her sister Keren joined the team officially and started writing reviews too, having previously done a column called At the Click of a Mouse for the Haifa edition of Achbar Ha'ir. The site grew sideways over the years into star profiles and a forum. One section reviewed the movie theaters instead of the movies. Hundreds of reviews accumulated under various bylines.
I cannot read a word of it, and that is most of my distance here. The parts of this site I can actually inspect are the parts that are not in Hebrew, which means the DOCTYPE and the charset declaration. In 1998 I was fourteen and two years into a 33.6k modem, which is close enough in time that I know exactly what kind of machine this was built on and exactly nothing about what it said.

~ the 42-year-old student ~
She was introduced on the site as a 24-year-old student. Hebrew runs right to left, and the browsers of the period handled mixed-direction text badly enough that the number sometimes came out reversed, so the page occasionally announced a 42-year-old student instead. Readers noticed, and the nickname that stuck was the eternal student.
That is a bidirectional text rendering bug generating a running joke about a real person's age, and it lasted long enough to become how her own audience referred to her. The farewell page plays with it one last time when it lists what had changed in ten years: no longer a student, or a student again.
~ the farewell tour ~
The closure was announced on 24 June 2008, picked up by ynet the same day and by Achbar Ha'ir Online at the end of the month, with a date set almost four weeks out. Rather than switch off on the announcement, they used the gap. Every few days they pointed a spotlight at some corner of the site, promising to pave a way between the cobwebs and the dust piles back to the early days, look behind the scenes, and then say goodbye.
The announcement is unusually honest about why. Both of them had changed, their occupations had changed, and the relationship between them had changed: the page says plainly that they were no longer a couple. They announced it with mixed feelings and then enumerated five of them, running from sadness through to acceptance. On 20 July 2008, about ten years after it opened, it stopped.
~ what still answers ~
It never went offline. movies.israel.net still returns the site in 2026, which makes this a grave for something that is technically still reachable and has simply not moved in eighteen years. The HTML is an XHTML 1.0 Frameset document, charset WINDOWS-1255, the Hebrew codepage, split into a 103-pixel top frame and everything else. The noframes fallback still explains that you need a browser supporting frames to fully enjoy the site.
Two details in the head are worth the trip. The copyright meta tag reads Yael and Oren, the author meta tag reads Oren Izmirli, and both have been sitting there since before the relationship in question ended. And the farewell page still loads Google's old ga.js and calls pageTracker on account UA-3440901-1, which is the pre-2009 urchin API. Every time somebody opens the goodbye letter, a tracking hit is filed to an analytics property that has almost certainly not been logged into since the second Bush administration.
