~ the eulogy ~
wanadoo's ten-year run overlaps almost exactly with my own time online. i started on dial-up at home in 1998 on a 33.6k modem, ttnet was the brand i used in turkey, and across the border in france the equivalent was wanadoo. it was the brand my french university contacts had on their email signatures in the early 2000s, the address that showed up on academic mailing lists from paris and toulouse. roughly. nobody i knew personally used it. for a turkish user on ttnet the wanadoo.fr suffix was a small marker of geography.
what wanadoo actually was: france telecom's internet division, peeled off as a separate brand in may 1996 so the state-linked telecom could enter the consumer isp market without lugging the france telecom name into it. the strategy worked. by the time of its july 2000 ipo wanadoo was the largest french isp and had started buying its way across europe. the freeserve acquisition in late 2000 made it the largest uk isp overnight, which is how a french brand briefly ended up in millions of british inboxes as wanadoo.co.uk.
the death was a rebrand more than a shutdown. on 1 june 2006 france telecom collapsed wanadoo and equant plus a handful of regional sub-brands into a single global orange identity. the wanadoo.fr email addresses kept working, redirected at the server level to orange.fr. the portal pages quietly changed color, the logo on the livebox routers updated through a firmware push. nobody lost connectivity. a brand that had built up nine years of consumer recall was simply turned off because france telecom had decided orange (acquired from hutchison whampoa in 2000) carried more weight in european markets.

~ what wanadoo built ~
wanadoo's first product was a national dial-up package at local rates, accessed through a single nationwide number, which mattered enormously in 1996 when most isp dial-ups were billed per minute by region. add a portal at wanadoo.fr with mail, news, a search box, a directory. the 1998 launch of adsl in france moved wanadoo from the second tier into market leader. by 2002 it was running a games publishing arm (wanadoo edition, ex-index+) and had bought out freeserve.
~ how the rebrand actually went ~
france telecom announced the orange consolidation in september 2005 and ran a year of brand crossover campaigns. honestly, wanadoo livebox routers got orange firmware. portal homepages added orange logos in the corner first, then in the center, then replaced wanadoo entirely. by june 2006 the brand was gone outside legacy email addresses. the freeserve domain in the uk became orange.co.uk. wanadoo.es became orange.es. the rebrand was clean by the standards of telecoms operations.
~ what it left ~
the wanadoo brand survived as a legacy email suffix (orange still routes mail at wanadoo.fr in 2026), but the portal, the company, the marketing identity, the games division, all gone. roughly. wanadoo edition the games publisher folded into atari europe in 2005 as part of the wind-down. the brand is now the kind of name french users in their forties will recognize and french users in their twenties will not.
