~ the eulogy ~
the regional youtube clones of 2007 to 2009 all rhymed with each other. trilulilu in romania was one of them, lined up alongside izlesene in turkey and dailymotion taking the larger francophone share. each country produced its own local-language upload site to absorb whatever youtube was too slow or too english-coded to handle. they all peaked between 2008 and 2010, they almost all died once youtube hired enough regional content moderators to cover the long tail.
trilulilu launched 22 january 2007 out of bucharest. sergiu biris and andrei dunca built the platform after watching youtube struggle with romanian-language metadata and discovery. the pitch was a generalist user-uploads site for romanian users on romanian servers with the romanian-language interface that youtube would not ship until 2009. the name itself was a romanian nonsense-syllable string that fit the goofy upload culture of the era.
the catalog stretched past video into images and audio files. you uploaded a music clip you had ripped off a manele cd, you uploaded a webcam video of your cousin's wedding, you uploaded a screenshot from a counter-strike match. the discovery layer was a tag-based front page with editorial picks at the top. the site sat in the romanian internet alongside hi5 for friends and yahoo messenger for chat, the pieces forming the bucharest student stack of that period.

~ how it landed ~
the funding round that defined trilulilu's arc landed in 2008 when french investor alexis bonte became the largest shareholder. bonte ran ea phenomic and other gaming and media bets out of paris, the trilulilu stake was a romanian-market position in his portfolio. the round paid for the bandwidth and the storage tier through the peak years.
peak monthly uniques crossed 2.2 million by 2009 with around 500,000 registered users. that put trilulilu in the romanian top ten by traffic at a moment when the romanian internet was still under 10 million regular users country-wide. mid 2009 the site briefly hit the number one slot on trafic.ro, the local ranking service, ahead of the established news portals. it was the high point of the localized-clone era.
~ the long tail ~
youtube rolled out the romanian-language interface in 2009 and the romanian copyright and trademark workflow shortly after. by 2012 the upload incentive had shifted to youtube for anyone serious about monetizing or distributing video, trilulilu was left with the legacy archive and the regional-meme corner. ad revenue thinned, the founder team drifted into other projects, the platform ran on maintenance through the mid 2010s.
digitap world srl picked up the husk in may 2020 with no announced plan beyond the trademark and the back-catalog. they pulled the public-facing site offline in july 2020. the user uploads, fourteen years of romanian-internet ephemera with no comprehensive archive mirror, went dark with the shutdown. the wikipedia entry preserves the dates and the founder names. the videos themselves are gone.
