touring bird had a 19-month life and i missed the whole thing. in 2018 i was 34 in ankara, the trip-planning surface i used was google maps and a forum thread or two. touring bird was a google area 120 incubator experiment that built a city-by-city catalog of tours and activities pulled from getyourguide and viator alongside the long tail of regional tour aggregators. the value proposition was price comparison across the booking platforms on the same tour. the brand was a small bird logo and a soft pastel ui that read like a startup landing page.
the team stealth-launched in paris in april 2018 with one city's worth of tours. by september 2018 the public launch covered 20 destinations through the touringbird.com domain. for whatever reason google did not push it through android or the main search page during the public-launch window, the marketing was a blog post on blog.google and some early press in skift and 9to5google. by mid-2019 the catalog had reached 75,000 experiences across 200 markets, which was the press-release peak (close enough).
area 120 had been google's internal incubator since 2016, the program that let engineers spend 20 percent of their work life on standalone bets that lived outside the main product orgs. touring bird was one of the program's more visible exits, a real consumer product with a working catalog and a clean ui (or whatever it was called). the area 120 governance model assumed most of these bets would fail outright. touring bird did not fail, it succeeded just enough to get pulled into the main travel org.

~ the funny part ~
this part you had to be in skift's audience for, and i was not. the funny part of touring bird is that it died of being too aligned with the broader google travel direction. google announced the shutdown on october 22 2019 with a one-paragraph post saying "the team will continue building compelling experiences for travelers" inside google travel. that was corporate for "we are taking your engineers, you can keep the data". the touringbird.com domain went read-only and the catalog stopped updating on the same day.
either way, the actual user-facing google travel surface that absorbed touring bird is the "things to do" tab inside google maps on a city search. honestly, the design fingerprints of touring bird are still visible in that tab. price comparison across two booking platforms on the same tour, the small card with the photo on one side and the duration plus price on the other. for whatever reason that integration arrived without any acknowledgment of the touring bird origin (close enough).
~ how it ended ~
november 17 2019 was the formal switch-off. the domain returned a redirect to google.com for a few weeks, then the redirect itself stopped. google trips had been killed the same year on a parallel shutdown timeline, the unified google travel page on google.com became the official surface for everything that touring bird and trips had been trying to do.
touring bird is the killedbygoogle entry that died because the bet had worked well enough to be worth absorbing. the area 120 program itself ran through another four years before google cut half the projects in september 2022 and finally wound the program down entirely in 2023. touring bird sits inside that arc as one of the few area 120 graduates that got absorbed instead of cancelled outright.
