Tiscali

1998 - 2023
dead europe
tiscali was a sardinian phone bill that briefly convinced itself it was europe's internet. renato soru launched it in cagliari in 1998 and gave italy internet with no monthly fee, then rode the dot-com money into a buying spree across thirteen countries. the debt from that spree took the next twenty years to unwind. what is left is a small italian brand under a holding company nobody outside italy has heard of.

~ the obituary ~

tiscali was a dial tone one country over from mine. i came online in turkey in '98 on ttnet, and my internet arrived through turkish phone lines and turkish bills. tiscali was an italian company that spent a few years trying to be everyone's provider from lisbon to prague. it never reached me, and it was never going to. but for a stretch around the turn of the century it was one of the loudest names in european internet, so it earns a stone.

Renato Soru started it in cagliari, on sardinia, in january 1998, right after italy deregulated its phone market. the name comes from a mountain on the island where they dug up an old village. the move that made it famous came in march 1999, tiscali free net, an internet subscription with no monthly fee where you paid only for the minutes you were connected. that broke the fixed-fee model the other italian providers were sitting on and dragged a lot of ordinary italians online for the first time.

then the dot-com money showed up. tiscali floated on the milan exchange in october 1999 at 46 euro a share, and soru used the paper to buy his way across the continent. World Online out of the netherlands, Libertysurf out of france, provider after provider folded into one brand. by early 2002 tiscali claimed more than sixteen million subscribers spread across thirteen countries, and for a moment it looked like europe would have its own answer to the american portals. i was watching from a turkish internet cafe with no stake in any of it.

~ the slide ~

buying thirteen countries on bubble-era stock leaves a bill. when the bubble broke, tiscali was carrying the debt of every provider it had swallowed and none of the growth it had promised the market. the next fifteen years were a slow sell-off in reverse. the british arm went to Carphone Warehouse in 2009 and became TalkTalk. the german and dutch pieces were sold or shut. tiscali kept retreating until it was more or less back where it started, an italian provider on a single peninsula, with a famous name and a balance sheet that never really recovered.

~ what it became ~

the corporate ending is quiet in the way these things usually are. in january 2023 the parent company renamed itself Tessellis, after merging with the fixed-wireless outfit Linkem, and the tiscali name dropped from the top of the masthead to a product label underneath it. that april the portal itself went dark, tiscali news, the italian web portal soru had launched back in 1998, ceased publication on the 30th after twenty-six years, and the journalists were sent off. the tiscali brand still hangs on a few italian broadband plans in 2026, so this is not a total erasure. what died was the ambition, the idea that a mountain in sardinia was going to wire the whole continent. that part is gone. it sits near [[freeserve]] and [[wanadoo]], the european providers whose real story was always the debt underneath the free internet.
