Tianya Club

1999 - 2023
dead asia
tianya club was the largest of china's first-wave bulletin boards, founded in haikou on february 14 1999. it ran BBS forums alongside a later blog and photo album product. by 2015 it ranked 11th most visited site in china with over 130 million registered users at peak. the human flesh search subforums became the canon reference for the whole crowd-investigation genre on the chinese internet. the original tianya.cn went dark on april 26 2023 after a beijing telecom data center stopped paying its bills. a thin tianya.net revival under new ownership came back on june 2 2026 with skeleton-crew operation. the cultural cohort that defined the original is not on it.

tianya sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. i was online from '98 on a turkish dial-up modem. the chinese-language BBS canon was on the other side of a language barrier and a great firewall. honestly, i learned the name from english-language tech press around 2010 when the human flesh search engine stories started getting translated. by then tianya was already a decade old and had its 130 million registered users.

the site was founded in haikou on the southern hainan province on february 14 1999 by xing ming and zhang yanchu. it started as a small board for stock-market discussion. for whatever reason, the format spread fast. within a few years tianya had become the canonical chinese BBS, the place where journalists and party-watchers gathered to argue. peak years were 2010 through 2015. at alexa's measure in 2015 tianya was the 11th most visited site in china and 60th globally.

the human flesh search subforums were the cultural footprint. users would post the photo of someone they wanted identified, often a hit-and-run driver or a corrupt official. within hours the crowd would surface a name and a home address. it was crowdsourced surveillance before the western internet had a name for it, the genre got translated out of tianya into english retrospectives by 2008. in those days.

the death was administrative, not cultural. on april 1 2023 a beijing telecom data center suspended the tianya.cn servers over unpaid hosting fees. the site stayed dark through april. on april 26 the suspension hardened into the cleanly-dead date everyone now cites. the operating company had been bleeding capital for years as users migrated to weibo and wechat. there was no announcement, no farewell post. the servers just stopped responding (cant remember exactly when the last working post timestamps).

on june 2 2026 a tianya.net revival came online under new ownership with a skeleton crew. the archive of the original tianya.cn forum threads is not in it. the cohort that wrote those threads is on different platforms now or has stopped posting altogether. the brand is back, the site is not. honestly, this is the friendster-asia 2009 pattern where someone keeps the domain warm but the cultural product is over.

~ what it actually was ~

tianya was not one product. it was a thicket of subforums each with their own customs. tianya zatan (random discussion) was the front door for hot-take posting. tianya guanchazhe (observer) was where the human flesh search threads ran. each subforum had moderators and a different archival behavior of its own. anyway, the format was post-and-reply with username avatars, the kind of bbs ui that aged less gracefully than threaded reddit or twitter.

the site ran blog and photo album products on the side from around 2006. neither of them was the cultural product. the BBS was. for whatever reason, when chinese social moved to weibo's microblog format in 2010 and then to wechat's app format in 2013, tianya did not adapt. it stayed BBS-shaped until the end.

~ what got buried with it ~

the archive is the loss. tianya hosted millions of long-form threads that were primary-source material for chinese internet culture, journalists used the platform as a leak channel. memorable posts include the early sars rumors in 2003 that beat state media by weeks, and several party-corruption stories that started as anonymous tianya threads before mainstream press picked them up. honestly, none of that archive was mirrored anywhere central.

the new tianya.net does not have it. wayback machine has spotty captures of the popular threads. the rest is gone. this happened more than once with chinese BBS sites in the 2020s, mop.com had a similar fate, kdnet faded, the platform layer of the chinese web that predated mobile is being lost in pieces.

~ the long tail ~

the founders had left the company years before the shutdown. xing ming exited the operational role in 2016, zhang yanchu around the same time. by 2020 tianya was being run by a successor management team trying to negotiate refinancing and not finding it. the april 2023 data center action was the trigger but the underlying solvency had been gone for three or four years.

the new ownership behind tianya.net 2026 is a small company with no public connection to the original founders. the cultural cohort that defined tianya in its 2005-2015 peak is on weibo or in private wechat groups now, or has stopped posting altogether. they are not on the new site. that gap is what makes the original cleanly dead.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
