~ the eulogy ~
texture was a US product end to end. five US magazine publishers plus rogers in canada built it to fight a battle over digital newsstand economics that did not extend to my side of the world. i was thirty when the app shipped in 2012, working in ankara, my magazine habit was already mostly gone by then. the turkish magazine market never had a digital netflix tier, and the english language titles texture cared about (vanity fair, time, the new yorker, wired, vogue) were never something i bought enough to want a bundle of.
the company started in 2010 as next issue media, a joint venture between condé nast, hearst, meredith, news corp and time inc, with rogers media joining for canada. the strategic logic was the same logic publishers were applying to spotify and netflix in their own categories: pool the catalog, charge a flat monthly fee, take the platform back from apple's newsstand and amazon. the app launched in april 2012 as next issue. by 2014 kkr had put 50 million dollars in. in september 2015 it rebranded as texture and pushed an all-you-can-read pitch at 9.99 a month for the regular tier or 14.99 for the premium tier with weekly titles.
texture had a catalog over 200 titles at peak. it worked on ios, android and the kindle fire HD, which made it one of the few cross-platform magazine subscription services that actually treated android as a first class citizen. the publishers were getting 15 million dollars in subscription revenue distributed to them by 2015. eddy cue called it the kind of product apple wished it had built when the acquisition closed on march 12 2018. the team moved to apple park in cupertino. fourteen months later, on may 28 2019, texture shut down. apple news+ had launched in march 2019 with a similar catalog and a 9.99 price point, ios and macos only. the android app went dark first. the ios app held on until may.

~ what it actually was ~
texture's pitch was a sentence. unlimited access to over 200 magazines on your tablet for 9.99 a month, with the premium tier adding weekly titles like time and the new yorker. the reading experience was a magazine layout viewer with page-by-page navigation, hot zones over images, and the option to drop into a reformatted text mode for longer articles. you got back issues going several years. you got cross-device sync so the issue you opened on the iPad picked up on your phone where you stopped.
the business model was the only one publishers could agree on. each publisher kept its own per-title revenue share based on read time, similar to spotify's pro-rata royalty pool. that math is what made texture sustainable and what later made apple news+ a fight, because apple's 50 percent cut left less for the publishers to split among themselves than the texture pool had.
~ the apple acquisition ~
the deal was announced march 12 2018 at an undisclosed price. the public framing was simple. apple wanted to build a magazine tier into apple news, the texture team had already solved the publisher relationships and the reader layout, buying was faster than building. the texture team relocated to apple park. the apple news+ product that shipped a year later was visibly the texture app rewritten inside the apple news shell, with the wall street journal and los angeles times added on top.
the trade was not symmetric for everyone. texture had been pan-platform: ios, android, kindle fire HD. apple news+ went ios and macos only, leaving the android and kindle reader audience without a migration path. some publishers raised the cut question publicly. condé nast and the new york times eventually pulled their titles out of news+ over the revenue split.
~ the long tail ~
the texture app survived in maintenance mode for fourteen months after apple bought it, then went offline on may 28 2019. existing subscribers got a free three month trial of apple news+ as the soft transition. the catalog mostly carried over for the publishers who stayed. the cross-platform reach did not.
texture left two artifacts. one is apple news+, which still operates in 2026 as the direct product descendant. the other is the proof of concept for a publisher-owned subscription consortium. five of the largest US magazine houses sat in a room for eight years and shipped a working product together. that did not happen again in the streaming-video wave that followed, where each publisher tried its own service instead. the texture cohort is the one time the publishers managed to cooperate before each went back to going it alone.
