Stile Project

1999 - 2010
dead us
jay stile's shock-aggregator site, registered october 3, 1999. ran for eleven years as part of the english-language shock canon alongside rotten.com and ogrish. won two webby awards in 2000 for the "weird" category, including the people's voice. sold off on december 2, 2010, after which the buyer flipped the domain into a generic portal. jay stile went back to school for computer science.

~ the last words ~

stile project never reached turkey in any meaningful way. it was a us shock-aggregator coded for the english-language internet of 1999 to 2010, the same canon as rotten.com and ogrish, written and run by a single operator using the pseudonym jay stile. the domain stileproject.com was registered on october 3, 1999. the site was sold off on december 2, 2010.

the format was the post-rotten shock site of the dial-up to early-broadband era. crude amateur content paired with forums and a roster of mirror domains the operator branded stilenet. some of the material was protest art and some was straightforward shock. all of it was hosted with the flat catalog voice the genre had been using since the mid 1990s. the editorial pitch was that nothing on the open web was off limits, and that the filtering of mainstream portals was the actual perversion.

the strange entry on the rap sheet is the awards shelf. in 2000 stile project won the webby award in the "weird" category plus the people's voice award in the same category, two trophies the international academy of digital arts and sciences handed out on the same night that yahoo and ebay were collecting their own. the shock site got a tuxedo invitation. that detail says more about the year 2000 web than about jay stile.

i was 14 in october 1999, on a 33.6k modem in ankara, mostly playing ultima online on turkish private servers like sylveria and learning html on geocities. i had no orbit overlap with the english-language shock canon of that period. its reputation came up later in 2000s forum chatter on donanimhaber, but the actual site was not where i spent dial-up minutes.

~ what it was ~

the architecture was simple. one operator behind a single domain, plus a satellite network of mirror sites under the stilenet umbrella. user submissions and forum posts sat on top. the long-tail content was the part that distinguished it from rotten or goatse: stile project ran what looked like a small magazine of essays plus a personal blog from the operator, mixed in with the catalog of shock material. it was less archive and more publication.

the operator gave interviews under the pseudonym in the early 2000s and made no real effort to hide that the site was a one-person editorial project. that was already an unusual posture for the shock-site tier, where rotten.com had pioneered a deliberately anonymous voice. stile project was personal in a way the rest of the canon was not.

~ the long tail ~

sales metrics were never public, but the site stayed on the same handful of "top shock sites" listicles that anchored the early-2000s genre. it kept publishing across the 2000s while most of its peers either folded (rotten went silent in 2012, after stile) or pivoted (ogrish rebranded as liveleak in 2006). stile project just kept being stile project.

~ the postmortem ~

on december 2, 2010 jay stile announced that the site had been sold. the wikipedia article does not name the buyer. what is clear is that the new owner did not continue the editorial project. the domain became a thin portal page within a few months and was eventually emptied out. by his own later statements, jay stile used the exit money to pay for a computer science education and earned a postgraduate degree in 2013, which is the most domestic ending any shock site operator has ever filed.
