~ the obituary ~
spolužáci.cz was a czech-language classmate finder. it predated facebook by seven years, survived facebook for ten, and finally closed on 31 august 2018 because a new european privacy law made the rewrite arithmetic look worse than the death arithmetic. seznam.cz, the czech search portal that had owned a majority stake since 2004, announced the closure on 4 april 2018. registrations stopped 24 may. download window for personal photos and documents ran until the final day.
the product had been built on a single mechanic: pick your school and your year, then find the people who sat near you. the database was indexed by school name and class year. nineteen years of czech schoolchildren had filled it in. by early 2018 there were still about 20,000 daily users opening the page, mostly past-graduates checking on reunions, but the new-user pipeline had been thinning since 2015.
spolužáci was a czech-language thing. that alone put it outside my orbit. the shape of the product is one i recognized from the second-tier social networks that survived in other countries by being more specific than facebook about one thing. lokalisten was the german entry in that bracket, nasza-klasa the polish one. spolužáci was the czech variant of the same idea.

~ how it started ~
internetpb launched the site in 1999 as a school-reunion directory. czech republic was five years into its post-1993 internet rollout. seznam.cz, founded 1996 by ivo lukačovič, was already on its way to being the local google. in 2004 seznam acquired a majority stake and folded spolužáci into its portfolio of vertical services. the product line stayed pretty stable after that: a search-by-school front page on top, profile pages built around school history rather than current activity underneath.
~ the gdpr cut ~
on 25 may 2018, the eu general data protection regulation came into force. for a 19-year-old social network with photos and personal data tied to under-18 accounts opened in the early 2000s, compliance meant a rewrite from the ground up. seznam's product manager veronika prokopová said as much in the closure announcement: implementing the changes required rebuilding the service, and the math on rebuilding a declining product did not work.
this is a death pattern that quietly took out a lot of small european social products in 2018. gdpr did not kill the dominant platforms, it killed the ones that had been coasting on legacy code and a shrinking user base. the cost of rewriting old auth and consent logic was load-bearing on whether a 20k-dau product was worth keeping.
~ what got buried ~
the czech school-graduation network that exists now is fragments. some classes moved to private facebook groups. some moved to whatsapp threads. the centralized index of who sat next to whom in 1996 in some specific gymnasium in brno: gone, with the photos that were uploaded to it. the archive is held by archiveteam in partial form. for a long-tail social product this is the most common ending: not a hostile shutdown, just a quiet sunset because the next regulatory cycle made the rebuild uneconomic.
