Sony VAIO

~ the eulogy ~
vaio showed up in my space around 2002. ankara had a few sony stores by then. the laptop showrooms always had one vaio on display under a pin spotlight, usually a silver thing that cost three times what the rest of the table did. i was finishing up high school. the kids i knew with internet at home had compaqs or the cheaper toshibas. the vaio was the one nobody could actually justify buying but everybody wanted to open and run their hand across the keyboard of.
sony launched the brand in july 1996 with the pcv-90 desktop in japan. the acronym started as "video audio input output". the brand cracked open globally with the pcg-505 superslim laptop in 1997, a thin-profile magnesium-clad machine that predated apple's titanium powerbook by four years. the c1 picturebook in 1998 was the first mainstream laptop with a built-in webcam, almost a decade before that became standard.
between 1998 and around 2008 vaio basically owned the high-end consumer laptop look. silver chassis, very thin, a tiny green power light when you closed the lid. premium screens before premium screens were a category that people thought about. the design language got copied so much that for a long time "a sony vaio" was an idiom in turkish electronics retail for "the nice laptop on the top shelf".

~ how it landed ~
i never owned one. import tax on a sony vaio in turkey was around 50% of the sticker for most of the 2000s. the cheapest vaio fit-15 sold at a turkish retailer in 2007 went for somewhere near 3500 turkish lira when a comparable acer was 1800. for a computer engineering student that math was just not there. people who had vaios in my orbit were the ones whose families brought them back from europe or the gulf, and you could spot the difference in the keyboard layout.
what vaio nailed was the lid. the closed-lid shot of a vaio on a wood desk was the desktop wallpaper of an entire era of corporate photography. the actual machines were not always great. early-2000s vaio laptops had reputation issues for fan noise and battery swelling. the screens and the chassis design were what people paid for.
~ the unraveling ~
the pc market collapsed under sony from two sides at once. apple's macbook line took the premium consumer tier by 2010. the ipad pulled the casual home laptop buyer away by 2012. sony's pc division lost money for most of those four years. internal reporting in late 2013 put the fiscal year loss at around $1.27 billion. on february 4 2014 sony's kazuo hirai held a press conference in tokyo and announced the sale of the entire vaio business to japan industrial partners, a private equity fund. the deal closed july 1 2014.
~ what got buried with it ~
vaio corporation continued making laptops in azumino under jip ownership, and in january 2025 the brand was sold again to nojima, a japanese electronics retailer. but the vaio you see on craigslist and ebay marked "sony" is from before july 2014, and the new vaios sell almost exclusively in japan. the sony era is the cultural-moment death. vaio sits next to [[compaq]] and [[gateway-computers]] in the cluster of pre-2014 windows-pc brands that were premium, then big, then sold off when smartphones turned laptops into a commodity.
