~ the goodbye ~
i missed music unlimited. by 2011 i was on spotify on a desktop browser with a turkish billing workaround, and music unlimited needed you to either own a playstation or run the sony entertainment network client on windows to even see the catalog. honestly, neither of those was in my house. the playstation 3 was not a console anyone i knew owned in ankara at retail prices, sony's pc client was a heavy install with weird codecs, and the sony brand was already a smaller part of the consumer-electronics conversation than it had been in the walkman era. music unlimited needed me to be deeper inside the sony ecosystem than i ever was.
the service launched on december 22 2010 in the uk and ireland under the qriocity brand, sony's umbrella name for connected media services at the time. the catalog had access to the sony music entertainment library plus deals with the other three major labels and a chunk of indies, with monthly tiers at three dollars and ten dollars depending on whether you wanted on-demand streaming or just the radio-style channels. the qriocity brand itself was retired in 2011 and the service became music unlimited under the sony entertainment network parent, which was the brand that ran the playstation store plus video unlimited plus the rest of sony's online media catalog.
the service peaked at around 25 million tracks in 19 countries by 2013, with the playstation 3 as the primary front-end and the bravia tvs and the sony walkman z mp3 players as secondary endpoints. spotify launched in the us in july 2011 and crossed sony in market awareness within eighteen months. apple music launched on june 30 2015. by then sony had already announced the shutdown.
the closing scene came on january 28 2015 when sony announced a deal with spotify. the music unlimited service would close on march 29 2015 and a co-branded playstation music app powered by spotify would take its place on the ps3, ps4, and sony bravia line. honestly, the spotify deal got music unlimited customers a discount path into spotify premium plus playlist migration via a tool that ran for sixty days after the cutoff. sony took the brand off the playstation store on the same day.

~ what it was ~
the product was sold as the music half of the qriocity bundle, paired with video unlimited as the movie-rental half. the technical stack was the sony network entertainment international backend, the same servers that ran the playstation store transactions and the bravia content catalog. that integration was the entire pitch over a standalone spotify install. you opened the music unlimited app on your ps3 and it knew your account, your billing was on the same card as your psn subscription, your playstation home avatar could broadcast what you were listening to.
back then. the catalog had personalized radio stations called sensme channels, a feature borrowed from sony's walkman pc software that built mood-based mixes from your library. honestly, that was the one feature spotify did not have at the time, and the one feature nobody actually used as their primary way of discovering music.
~ the decline ~
sony built music unlimited around the playstation 3, and the playstation 3 stopped being the center of the media-streaming conversation after the playstation 4 launched in november 2013. the ps4 launched without music unlimited support for the first three months, which signaled internally that the service was already being deprioritized inside sony network entertainment. the smartphone apps existed but were slower than spotify and apple music on the same hardware, and the bravia integration only mattered if you had already bought a bravia.
the qriocity brand burn-out from the 2011 playstation network outage was the other piece. when the hack took down psn for 23 days in april and may 2011, the qriocity brand died with it and music unlimited never quite shook the association even after the rename.
~ the long tail ~
the spotify deal was the cleanest exit sony could have taken. anyway, playstation music launched on march 30 2015 in 41 countries, more than music unlimited had ever covered, and ran as a co-branded spotify integration with the playstation account as the login. sony stopped trying to own the streaming category and outsourced it to the company that had won. that deal is still live in 2026 with playstation music as the spotify wrapper inside the ps5 home screen.
honestly, the music unlimited story ended the same way the qriocity story did, with sony folding a sub-brand back into a partner deal. the consumer-facing brand died on march 29 '15 and the back-office team migrated to support the spotify partnership. nothing else carries the music unlimited name as of today.
