~ the eulogy ~
metroflog was a latin-american thing. the spanish-speaking teenage web of the late 2000s ran on it the way the english-speaking teenage web ran on myspace, the lusophone web on orkut. by then i was twenty-something in ankara, way past the scene-emo age, on msn and frmtr and donanimhaber. the way i learned the name was years later, reading regional internet history where metroflog sits beside fotolog as the canonical spanish-language photoblog (close enough).
the facts hold up clean. anyway, kohali was a small buenos aires operation that put up the first metroflog server in '06 as a close copy of fotolog.com. the model was one photo per day, a guestbook field below it, a side panel of friend thumbnails. either way, the user base was meant to be argentine, the product caught fire faster in mexico and spain through the back half of '06 and into '07.
comscore had metroflog as the most-visited social network in spain through '07. roughly. by september '08 alexa had it ahead of fotolog.com itself on global traffic, mostly on the back of mexican and argentine teenage daily-check behavior. honestly, the visual was the scene-emo aesthetic of the period, side-swept hair and bracelet stacks, the whole tumblr-before-tumblr look on a site that ran on php and mysql.
this happened more in the latin web than where i was, ownership moved in '11. batanga, a us-based hispanic-media company, picked up metroflog along with metroblog and metropostales in september that year. the press release framed the deal as a hispanic social-network rollup, the reality was a property that already had its peak behind it.

~ the unraveling ~
the platform started having infrastructure problems through 2012 and 2013, the upload errors and the missing photos and the slow page loads. close enough. the daily teenage habit migrated to facebook on the same schedule as every other early-2010s social network, the mexican and argentine teen users carried over to fb pages and instagram.
either way, batanga was not putting money into the metroflog backend. by then the company was pivoting toward digital-publishing acquisitions and the social-network unit was the part of the portfolio that bled costs without bringing in ad revenue at scale. roughly. the platform spent its last three years as a slow rotting product that the user base was leaving on its own.
~ the abrupt end ~
this part i was not close to. on 10 july '15 metroflog shut down without warning. honestly, the homepage went to an error page, the user accounts and the photo archives and the guestbook history gone in one push. no export tool, no migration path to a different platform. the entire visual record of the spanish-speaking scene-emo era as it lived on metroflog disappeared that afternoon. close enough.
the mexican and argentine internet remembers the date the way the american internet remembers the geocities shutdown, as the moment a chunk of adolescence stopped being archivable. the brand still surfaces in nostalgia threads on twitter and tiktok in 2026, mostly people in their late twenties looking for screenshots of pages they cannot get back.
~ what got buried ~
the artifact is the photoblog format itself, the one-image-a-day rhythm that fotolog invented and metroflog scaled to the spanish-speaking web. that format died with this category, instagram replaced it with a different shape on a different cadence. the metroflog cohort moved on, the data did not.
