~ the obituary ~
Sonico launched in buenos aires on july 28, 2007. it was built by rodrigo teijeiro under the fnbox holding, positioned from day one as a social network for the entire latin american audience: argentina, mexico, brazil (with a portuguese localization), colombia, peru, chile, and the spanish-speaking diaspora in the united states. by 2008 the platform had raised 4.3 million dollars from dn capital and other investors, and the registered-user count was growing fast. it hit twenty million within a year and passed fifty million around 2011.
sonico's peak years overlap with mine in a calendar sense, but the language wall closed off the platform entirely. by 2010 i was on facebook, msn was still the default for chat, and the spanish-language social internet in argentina was the kind of layer i could read tech-press summaries of without ever opening the site. it was orkut's neighbor, hi5's spanish-language peer, and the platform that brazilians used in the brief window before facebook's portuguese version became dominant.
the differentiator on the marketing side was a privacy-and-safety story. sonico publicly verified users against real-name policies earlier than facebook did in latin america, and the company spent significant effort on tools for parents and on takedown processes that the press picked up on. that story carried it past fifty million registrations and through one large funding round in 2009 of about 1.7 million dollars. but the active-user numbers never matched the registered-user numbers, and the platform did not find a model that worked.

~ how it landed ~
in 2007 latin america was not a unified social-network market. orkut held brazil, hi5 was strong in mexico and parts of central america, and the spanish-speaking south had a mix of friendster-style sites and local experiments. sonico's pitch was that one platform built for the region, with spanish and portuguese from launch and with a server footprint inside latin america, would beat the patchwork. that argument convinced investors and got the platform to fifty million registrations in three years.
~ the slide ~
by 2011 the cracks were obvious. facebook's spanish and portuguese localization had landed, mobile was eating desktop, and sonico's monetization story was thin. fnbox started unbundling its portfolio: tarjetas (greeting cards), recarga (mobile top-up), and sonico were spun out into separate units. the recarga business became the focus, eventually rebranding to recargapay and pivoting into fintech. sonico the social network was the part of the portfolio that did not have a second act inside fnbox.
~ what it became ~
match group bought sonico in august 2014. the acquisition was not framed as a continuation of the social network. iac wanted the audience data and the dating-adjacent product surface, and the sonico brand was wound down quietly after the deal. the domain redirected to twoo.com for a period, which is the belgian dating product match also owned. the rodrigo teijeiro of 2024 runs recargapay as a brazilian fintech success story; the sonico of 2010 is now a brand-history footnote inside an iac portfolio.
