Simfy

2010 - 2015

simfy was the german answer to spotify from may 2010 to may 2015. it operated in dach only, never got the funding to keep up with major-label advances, and was locked out by warner music in february 2015. by april the parent company was in liquidation. the site went into a limited-song holding pattern on 1 may 2015 and pointed everyone to deezer.

~ the eulogy ~

simfy launched on 3 may 2010 out of cologne. simfy ag ran it as a spotify-shaped subscription streaming service for germany, austria, switzerland. apps on iphone, android, blackberry. catalog from the majors plus merlin plus the usual aggregators. the pitch was that a german-built product with local label relationships would beat an incoming swedish challenger on its home turf.

the challenger arrived on schedule. spotify launched in germany on 13 march 2012 and simfy never got clear air after that. mtn partnered in june 2014 to spin off simfy africa. that side of the business had legs. the european side did not. warner music group pulled its entire catalog on 26 february 2015 without a public explanation, which was the point at which the majors visibly stopped believing simfy could pay them.

by april 2015 simfy ag was in liquidation. on 1 may 2015 the homepage was carrying a notice about a "limited number of songs" and a link telling users to migrate to deezer. no formal shutdown press release, no data export, no user-facing goodbye. the deezer redirect was the entire wind-down comms. subscribers who had annual plans reportedly took months to get anything sorted with billing.

i was 30 in may 2015, in ankara, on ttnet, and none of the european streaming services were licensed here anyway. spotify would not launch turkey until 2013, and even then coverage of new arrivals was patchy for years. simfy specifically was a dach product with no reason to think about tr. i learned it existed while writing this. the interesting piece is not the product itself but the sequence: warner pulls the catalog, liquidation follows two months later, deezer inherits the users.

~ the funding gap ~

major-label licensing runs on multi-million advance payments before a single track is streamed. spotify raised the capital to pay them. simfy did not. the founders shopped for growth investors through 2013 and 2014 and never closed a round big enough to keep pace. by early 2015 the balance sheet could not carry another advance cycle, which is why warner walked, which is why liquidation followed. this is the standard mid-2010s indie-streaming death curve, and simfy is one of the cleanest examples in the european data.

~ the mtn spin ~

simfy africa was the surviving branch. mtn, the south african telco, first partnered with simfy in june 2014 for streaming distribution across mtn's mobile markets. after the european collapse in 2015, simfy africa kept operating independently, and in november 2018 mtn bought it outright. the technology stack that could not survive against spotify in germany found a real market as a telco-bundled service in emerging africa. it is the rare case of the acquired-region product outliving the parent by years.

~ the deezer inheritance ~

deezer was the beneficiary of simfy's wind-down messaging and picked up the segment of german subscribers willing to migrate rather than defect to spotify. by 2016 the dach streaming market had settled into spotify, deezer, and eventually apple music, with amazon music prime bundling further shrinking the challenger tier. simfy's slot in the market never really reopened.
