~ the obituary ~

setapp mobile was a regulatory product. the european union passed the digital markets act, and apple was forced to allow third-party app marketplaces on ios inside eu borders. macpaw, a ukrainian mac software company best known for cleanmymac, was one of the first developers to ship an alternative store under the new rules. setapp mobile launched in closed beta in may 2024 and went public in september 2024. it lasted seventeen months.

on 16 february 2026 macpaw closed the store. the official statement cited apple's "still-evolving and complex business terms" that no longer aligned with setapp's business model. the underlying math was that apple charges alternative store operators a core technology fee of fifty euro cents per first install per year, above a one-million install threshold per app. app developers themselves pay a separate ctf for each app distributed through an alternative store. the spread between what setapp mobile could charge subscribers and what the ctf demanded had narrowed to nothing.

setapp the mac subscription bundle, which has been macpaw's main product since 2017, stayed alive. setapp mobile was a sub-product, an attempt to extend the mac model to ios in the one jurisdiction where apple had been forced to allow it. that attempt ended seventeen months in.

the digital markets act took effect in march 2024. apple's compliance posture was strict and slow. third-party marketplaces had to post a one-million-euro letter of credit and agree to apple's notarization process for every binary. they also had to absorb the ctf themselves on every install. setapp mobile launched into that environment as a curated subscription bundle of fifty-plus mac-style apps for €9.49 a month. the pitch was a single subscription that gave you a small trusted catalog instead of the open ios app store's millions of options.

~ what killed it ~

the ctf. specifically the way the ctf stacked on a subscription model where the operator absorbed the cost rather than passing it through to subscribers. the european commission opened a non-compliance investigation against apple's ctf structure in march 2024 and again in late 2024. the investigation was still open in early 2026 when setapp mobile gave up. macpaw said the apple terms were still evolving, which read as "we cannot run a sustainable business while the underlying fee structure keeps changing." the eu's dma fines on apple in april 2025 were not enough to change the ctf before setapp mobile ran out of patience.

~ honest distance ~

turkey is outside the eu and the dma does not apply here. setapp mobile never existed for me. side-loading and alternative app stores on iphone are a thing that happened in brussels and berlin, not in ankara. the death of setapp mobile matters as a signal of how hard apple has made the alternative-store business model, not as the loss of a product i ever used.
