Apple Music Voice Plan

~ the goodbye ~
the voice plan was a small experiment that never reached me as anything more than a press-release headline. it shipped in december 2021 alongside ios 15.2 as a $4.99-per-month tier of apple music, half the price of the standard individual plan but with one specific restriction. you could only access the music through siri. no in-app library browsing, no playlist editing by hand. you asked out loud and the song played.
the obvious target was the homepod buyer. apple had a smart speaker, the smart speaker was tightly bound to siri, and the standard apple music subscription was priced for someone who also wanted the app on their phone and laptop. the voice plan was an attempt to say "if siri is your interface, we will price for siri". in turkey i was watching this from the outside. the voice plan launched in seventeen countries on day one and turkey was not on the list. siri's turkish-language quality was still uneven enough that even if the plan had reached the country, the experience would have been frustrating.
twenty-three months later apple shut it down. the discontinuation came with no public announcement, no farewell post, no migration tool. on 2 november 2023 the plan simply disappeared from the apple music sign-up flow. existing subscribers got rolled forward through their current billing cycle and then needed to pick a real tier. macrumors and 9to5mac were the first to notice; apple confirmed only by removing the support pages.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | 13 December 2021 (announced 18 October 2021, shipped with iOS 15.2) |
|---|---|
| Peak | subscriber count never disclosed, generally assumed to be small |
| Killed | 2 November 2023 |
| Lifespan | 1 year 10 months |
| Made by | Apple |
| Killed by | low uptake, low margin, voice-only constraint never made sense outside the homepod |
~ why it never worked ~
the voice plan asked the user to commit to a constraint that almost no music listener actually wanted. asking siri for "play that one song from the playlist i made last summer" is harder than tapping on the playlist and scrolling. the plan made sense in a kitchen with a homepod and no phone in hand, but most homepod owners already had a regular apple music subscription bundled with the family plan or the apple one bundle. the voice-only restriction had no audience that was not already covered by a cheaper-per-person tier.
~ the silent ending ~
apple's pattern for killing low-uptake services is to remove them from the marketing pages first and answer questions later. ping went that way in 2012 with a brief farewell post. apple music connect went the same way in 2018 with no statement at all. by the time the voice plan ended in late 2023, apple had stopped pretending that every consumer service launch was permanent.
~ what it leaves ~
the voice plan is a small data point in the long argument about whether voice interfaces will ever replace screens for media consumption. apple bet $4.99-per-month worth of credibility on the answer being "for some people, yes". the answer turned out to be "for almost nobody, no". the homepod itself is still alive, but the dedicated voice-priced tier is not, and the apple-music sign-up flow now only offers tiers that assume you have a screen in your hand.
