Samsung Messages

2009 - 2026
dead
samsung messages was the stock sms client samsung shipped on galaxy phones from the touchwiz era onward. samsung announced its end-of-service in early 2026 and told users to migrate to google messages. the galaxy s26 line shipped without it on day one. after july 2026 the app was pulled from the galaxy store and stopped being the default outgoing sms client. older devices still on android 11 or below kept a frozen install.

~ the goodbye ~

samsung messages was on every galaxy phone i ever owned. i was a long-running android user in turkey by the time samsung phones became the default android body shape, and the green text-bubble app sitting in the dock was the samsung-flavored one, not the google one. for most of those years i barely thought about it. it was just where sms landed.

this is mostly told from samsung's own end-of-service page. samsung messages traces back to the first galaxy s in 2009 and the early touchwiz layer that samsung used to differentiate from stock android. it never had a marketing brand of its own. it was simply "messages", with a samsung-styled icon, and it was the default sms handler on every galaxy phone for over fifteen years.

the announcement came in early 2026. samsung put up a page telling users to switch their default messaging app to google messages. the page warned that after july 2026 the app would stop being downloadable from the galaxy store, and added that all conversations would be migrated automatically once the user moved over. the galaxy s26 generation shipped without samsung messages installed at all.

the shutdown is partial in a peculiar way. older galaxy phones still running android 11 or below were exempt from the change, so the app technically still works on those devices. on every newer phone in samsung's stable, july 2026 is the cut.

~ what it actually was ~

this part you mostly took for granted. the app was a stock sms/mms client with samsung's own ui choices layered on top of the standard android telephony framework. it had message categories and a search field that worked. long-press multi-select handled bulk delete, plus the usual block-number and block-spam menus that mobile carriers wanted hooked into the os.

in those days. rcs (the protocol that gave android the read-receipts and typing-indicator parity with imessage) was supported in samsung messages from around 2018 onward. by then google had its own competing rcs implementation in google messages, and the two clients sat on the same phone reading the same protocol with slightly different ui chrome on top. the duplication was the original strategic problem samsung had to choose its way out of.

~ the google messages handover ~

this is where it lands. samsung chose the side of letting google own the messaging client. the rcs spec had matured around google's implementation. the cross-android contact graph google built into the rcs identity layer was now the de-facto standard for non-imessage chat, and supporting two parallel rcs clients across samsung's worldwide phone base was a cost samsung did not want to keep paying.

samsung had already been shipping google messages as the preinstalled default on most us-carrier galaxy phones since the early 2020s. the 2026 announcement just made it global and explicit. samsung still ships its own dialer, its own keyboard, its own gallery, its own browser. messages was the one stock app where the cost of duplication outweighed the brand control.

~ the long tail ~

this part i actually was around for. samsung messages exiting the default-app slot ends a piece of how samsung phones felt in your hand for fifteen years. people who lived inside the samsung-styled chat bubble through the 2010s now have google's bubble there instead. the migration was supposed to be seamless and mostly was, with the caveat that any feature unique to samsung messages (custom backup, the rcs-specific samsung effects) did not carry over.

in the bigger picture this is the same decision samsung made about chaton in 2015, just at a much later point in the lifecycle. samsung is not a chat-app company. it makes phones. the app sitting on top of the phone went back to being a google product, where it had quietly been heading since rcs became real.

"samsung isn’t good with their software anyway. it was so clunky for the small period of time i had to use a hand-me-down samsung phone..."
