Rookie

2011 - 2018

rookie was an online magazine for teenage girls that tavi gevinson started in 2011 when she was fifteen, already famous from her style-rookie blog. it ran essays and photo work about being young and a girl on the internet, and for seven years it was a real place a lot of readers grew up inside of. gevinson closed it herself in november 2018, saying digital media had gotten too hard to fund and she did not want to keep it alive by selling it or begging readers for money. it went quiet on its own terms, which is rarer than it sounds.

rookie was built for teenage girls in the english-speaking internet. i was a twenty-seven-year-old computer engineer in ankara the year it launched, so this one was never mine to lose. to be honest. i knew the name the way you know a magazine you are simply not the reader of, from the edges, through people writing about it rather than in it.

tavi gevinson started rookie in september 2011, when she was fifteen and already famous from a fashion blog she had been writing since eleven. the site published essays and photo stories about growing up, most of it made by young women for young women. it did not sound like a brand talking down to a demographic, because a teenager was actually running it.

it ran for seven years and built the kind of loyalty most publications never get. in those days. it put out thick yearly print anthologies and toured them. then in november 2018 gevinson closed it herself. she said digital media had become too hard to run and rookie could not pay for itself anymore, and she did not want to keep it going by selling it off or leaning on readers for donations. the last day was the thirtieth.

~ the rise ~

this happened in a part of the web i watched from far away. what made rookie work was that it treated being young and unsure as a real subject worth good writing, instead of a phase to be marketed to. it gave a lot of young writers and photographers their first place to publish, and some of them went on to careers that started in those pages. for a stretch it was the rare site a reader could genuinely grow up inside.

~ the postmortem ~

rookie did not get killed by a scandal or an acquisition gone wrong. it ran out of a business model, the same wall that took a lot of independent web media in the late 2010s, when ad money moved to the platforms and left the sites that made the actual work with nothing. gevinson could have kept the name breathing on someone else's terms. she chose to end it clean instead, which is why it reads less like a shutdown and more like a decision.
