~ the eulogy ~
Resett launched on 28 August 2017 with Helge Lurås as its editor, funded into existence by investors including Mikkel Dobloug, and it spent five years as the loudest of Norway's alternative news sites. Klassekampen described the recipe as Breitbart's, and a research article in Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift said much the same thing in drier language. Resett's own charter said it worked for democracy and a liberal society built on the best of Western cultural history. It presented itself as politically independent and it sat on the right.
The traffic figures it published early on were real enough to take seriously: roughly 560,000 unique readers a month for March 2018, roughly 30,000 a day by that July. What it never got was institutional membership. The Norwegian Association of Editors turned Lurås down in September 2018, citing repeated breaches of the press's cautionary code, and the Press Complaints Commission had already ruled against the site in February that year for running a piece about an editor without giving him a right of reply.
Money came apart faster than reputation. Google cut AdSense off on 23 April 2019. A week later Vipps, the Norwegian payment app everybody uses, ended the customer relationship on the grounds that the paper was polarizing and had misused the Vipps brand, then reversed itself shortly after. By October 2019 Resett said it was back on AdSense. These are the two chokepoints an independent outlet in a small market actually lives on, and both of them turned out to be revocable by a company making an editorial judgment it had no obligation to explain.
Then the board turned on the editor. In June 2022, after disagreements over the editorial line, Lurås was dismissed, in his words on the day. Maria Zähler took over and said she wanted a decent, realpolitik-minded paper on the Norwegian right. In August Lurås confirmed he had sold his roughly 15 percent stake for a little over 253,000 kroner. In October the investor Petter Inge Remøy bought his way to more than 90 percent of the company through Piiotarho AS.
The ending arrived in November, from a regulator. Medietilsynet refused the application for press support, finding that Resett had not demonstrated an editor meeting the terms of the Redaktørplakaten, and noting breaches of press ethics on source use and on the line between fact and opinion. No subsidy, no realistic hiring budget for an editor who could win one. The board said it could not find a replacement within its finances and filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday 14 December 2022.

~ the editor was the product ~
Norway's press subsidy is conditional on being a certain kind of institution, and the institution is defined partly by having an editor who answers to a code. Resett spent five years operating outside that definition on purpose, and at the end the definition was what closed it. The state declined to pay for the paper and the market would not cover the gap.
~ who bought the body ~
Lurås bought the bankruptcy estate in December 2022, domain and archive included, and resett.no now redirects to iNyheter.no, where he is editor. The old address has served nothing but a redirect since 22 December 2022, eight days after the filing. The last captures of the real site are 21 December, and the two from 14 and 15 December are visibly heavier than any normal day, which is what a shutdown notice looks like in bytes.
~ distance ~
I had not heard of Resett before researching it, and I want to be plain about why it is here rather than pretend to an opinion about Norwegian politics I have not earned. What is legible from Ankara is the mechanism. A news site in a small language gets cut off by an ad network, then by a payments app, then by a subsidy office, and each of those decisions is made by people applying rules that were not written with it in mind. Turkey has its own version of that story told with different instruments. What stays with me is how few switches it takes.
