Refern

2023 - 2025

a recent college graduate posting as jaks024 launched refern on product hunt at the end of 2023 as an ad-free local-first visual reference library for illustrators and concept artists. two years later he posted a shutdown note saying the csam reports had piled up beyond what one solo developer could moderate and the google safe search api bill was bigger than the revenue. the site went dark on 13 september 2025.

~ the obit ~

refern never reached me at the time. it was a 2024 indie-design-twitter coded tool, the kind of thing a solo developer launches on product hunt and gets a hundred quiet sign-ups from illustrators and concept artists in vancouver and tokyo before any tech press picks it up. i learned the name in 2026 from indieweb's site-deaths page, where it sits under the september 2025 entries. the whole arc happened in a quiet part of the small-tool web that does not show up in techcrunch.

the developer posted publicly only as jaks024, first name jackson, no last name attached. he described himself as a recent college graduate funding the project alone from his own savings. the product was a visual reference library for creatives, files stored locally on your machine plus a "refern clipper" browser extension that let you grab any image from the web with one click. the explicit pitch was "every reference you collect, in one place you own."

the launch went up on product hunt on 30 december 2023, a second push followed on 26 june 2024. the small audience that found it was the people who already used pureref and milanote and wanted a cleaner indie alternative to pinterest's algorithmic feed. one-time pricing plus local-first storage, the kind of values the indieweb crowd had been arguing for since the early-2010s pivot away from rented platforms. jaks024 ran the whole stack himself.

~ what it was ~

the use case was specific. an illustrator working on a character study would clip thirty reference images of a particular pose or lighting setup from across the web and drag them into a refern moodboard, stored locally so the project survived going offline. a concept artist would build a folder per project with hundreds of clipped references. the tool sat between pinterest's algorithmic discovery feed and a folder full of jpegs on a desktop, with the labeling and discovery affordances of a proper organizer.

the local-first storage was the part the indieweb crowd loved. refern did not need your account to function and it did not need your data on its servers to come back daily for an algorithmic feed. it was a tool you paid once for and owned. for what its worth, that posture is the opposite of the data-extraction model that pinterest and behance run on, and the small audience that cared about that distinction was exactly the audience that found refern.

~ what really happened ~

on 13 september 2025 jaks024 posted a shutdown note at refern.app/shutdown. the reason was two things bundled together. the first was csam. an uptick in reports of child sexual abuse material being uploaded had exceeded what a single solo developer could triage and process with the law-enforcement reporting workflow that csam compliance requires in the us. the second was money. refern had been paying for the google safe search api to label nsfw uploads automatically, and the bill was bigger than the revenue from the one-time license fees.

he wrote that he was "tired, burnt out, and stressed." he gave users a window to download their saved references before the data was deleted, then on 13 september the site went dark. the shutdown page at refern.app later became a placeholder for a relaunched product attempt, which is why the canonical archive of the announcement now lives on indieweb's site-deaths page rather than on the original domain.

~ what got buried with it ~

the csam moderation problem is the part that should outlive refern. any platform that accepts user-uploaded images at any scale runs into it within months. the legal regime around csam reporting in the us is strict, the tooling to detect it automatically is expensive, and the human review work is genuinely traumatic. a solo developer cannot run that loop, and refern is one of the small pile of indie projects that have hit this exact wall and shut down rather than continue. cohost ran into a different version of the same problem before it folded in 2024.

the rest of what got buried is smaller. the moodboard-with-clipper shape refern occupied is still served by pureref, eagle, milanote and a small wave of new indie tools. none of them carry the local-first plus ad-free solo-developer combination that made refern matter to the audience that cared. jaks024 has not put out a successor under his own name.
