~ the last words ~
by the time rediff bol reached version 8 i had been on msn for years. india built its own dial-up-era messenger and i watched from a distance. from ankara on ttnet the messenger stack was icq early, then msn everywhere from around 2004 onward. yahoo messenger had the second slot with the same friend graph as the yahoo mail accounts we still kept. rediff bol was in the same category as those two but scoped to the indian market with a hindi-first interface and free sms as the local hook.
rediff.com was founded by ajit balakrishnan on 8 february 1997 in mumbai as one of the first indian web portals. rediffmail was the email product. bol was the messenger. the alpha shipped for public testing in early 2005 and got its first review on techenclave on 16 january 2005 with the tag "still in alpha". by 2007 the client had voip voice chat and webcam video plus the sms-to-mobile feature that made it stand out from yahoo messenger and msn in india.
the hindi language support was the piece that mattered most locally. yahoo messenger had a hindi option too but bol was designed around it from the start. the download traffic came from users on 128 kbps and 256 kbps connections in tier-two indian cities where free sms plus voice chat over a low-speed line was a real product. the version numbers walked up through the late 2000s. version 7 in the early 2010s and version 8 sometime after that.
~ the record ~
| Born | alpha version reviewed on techenclave 16 january 2005, launched as public beta shortly after by rediff.com india ltd |
|---|---|
| Peak | millions of dial-up-era indian pc users on the strength of free carrier sms and hindi language support |
| Killed | product discontinued from rediff's site around 2015 as india's messaging market moved fully to smartphone apps |
| Lifespan | roughly 10 years across eight major versions |
| Made by | rediff.com india ltd, mumbai, ajit balakrishnan's parent company |
| Killed by | whatsapp's india expansion and the collapse of pc messenger use once smartphones ran under $100 |
~ the india moment ~
india's dial-up-to-broadband curve ran a few years behind the anglo world. that gave bol a window. the pc messenger era in india stretched into the early 2010s where in the us or western europe it had already ended in 2008 or 2009. rediff had a hindi-native product with a free sms channel to indian carriers at a time when sms itself still cost real money to send from a phone. the value proposition was legible even to households where the only pc was in an internet cafe and the mobile phone was a nokia 1100.
~ what really happened ~
whatsapp opened its india office in 2015. by then android phones under $100 were shipping into every tier-two city. cheap 3g data was arriving with jio still a year away. the pc-messenger use case simply evaporated. rediff kept the download page live for a while and then quietly took it down. software.informer archive pages still host old version 8 installers as of 2026, which is how you know the product was never given a formal obituary. the discontinuation happened by administrative decay rather than by announcement.
~ what got buried ~
rediff bol was the closest india came to owning a native pc-era chat protocol. it did not have the network effect scale of msn but it had the local-language and local-carrier integration that made it the default for a specific slice of indian pc users through the mid-to-late 2000s. once whatsapp landed with the same free-to-message pitch on a phone the whole layer collapsed. rediff itself pivoted through mail and content and now operates as a shrunken portal. the messenger is a wikipedia-adjacent footnote.
