Facebook Messenger Lite
~ the goodbye ~
messenger lite was for phones that were not mine. i was an engineer with a machine that could run the full app and a connection that could feed it, so the stripped-down version never had a reason to be on my screen. it was built for the other side of the phone market, the cheap android handset with two gigabytes of storage and a data plan measured in megabytes. that user was real and there were hundreds of millions of them. i was just not one.
facebook released messenger lite in october 2016, and the pitch was honesty about the rest of the world. the main messenger app had swollen into a heavy thing full of games and payment features, and on a slow connection or an old phone it was miserable. lite threw all of that out and kept the messages. it was under ten megabytes and it ran where the real app crawled, which is exactly why it took off across india and brazil.
the numbers were not small. the lite apps together counted something near 760 million downloads, with india the single largest slice. this was not a failed product, it was a successful one that meta decided it no longer wanted to run. keeping a separate lightweight app meant maintaining two messengers, and the whole point of the second one was to reach people meta could not monetize as hard. so the accountant's version of the story is simple.
~ the chronicle ~
| Born | October 2016, a lightweight Messenger for low-end Android |

| Peak | hundreds of millions of installs, biggest in India and Brazil |
| Killed | 18 September 2023, removed from Google Play |
| Lifespan | about seven years |
| Made by | Facebook, later Meta |
| Killed by | Meta consolidating everyone into the main Messenger app |
~ the day it died ~
meta announced the end in august 2023 and pulled messenger lite from the google play store on 18 september. the ios version had already gone in 2020. users were told to switch to the full messenger or, if their phone could not handle it, to use facebook lite with messaging folded in. for a lot of people on the oldest hardware that was a downgrade dressed as a choice, because the whole reason they were on lite was that the full app did not run.
~ what it took with it ~
what died was one of the few pieces of big tech built deliberately for people with less. the lite apps were an admission that not everyone is on a flagship with unlimited data, and for a while meta acted on that admission. killing messenger lite did not take messaging away from those users, but it did hand them a heavier app on lighter hardware and call it consolidation. the version of the internet made for the slow connection keeps getting quietly retired, and i only notice because i grew up on a 33.6k modem and remember when everything was the slow connection.
