Microsoft Sway

2014 - 2026

sway was microsoft's bet that the future of presentations was a single scrolling web page instead of a slide deck. the bet did not win. it sat in the office 365 launcher for eleven years while everyone kept opening powerpoint. the "create new" entry was removed from the copilot create tab in march 2025. the windows desktop app retired on june 1 2026. the web version at sway.cloud.microsoft technically survives but the public roadmap has not had an item since 2017.

~ the obituary ~

sway came out around 2015. by then i was a working computer engineer in ankara, the office 365 tenant at work had it pinned in the app launcher, i think i clicked on the tile once to see what it was and then never opened it again. i was on powerpoint for slides, on word for memos, sway never had a job that something else was not already doing.

the product launched as a preview in october 2014 and went public in august 2015. the pitch was that a presentation did not need to be a slide deck at all. you could pour text and images into a single long web canvas, sway would auto-layout the result into something that scrolled on a phone and projected on a screen. it was branded as office sway, the icon sat next to word and excel in the launcher. it shipped into every office 365 tenant the moment the marketing department let it.

honestly, the trouble was that the tile sat there without anyone clicking it. powerpoint was already on every desk and prezi was already on the web for people who wanted something fancier. the corporate use case for a scrolling responsive presentation never really materialized. by 2017 the official feature blog stopped getting new entries and the ios app was discontinued in december 2018. the windows app limped along for eight more years.

~ how it landed ~

the early reviews were polite. the auto-layout engine actually worked, you could drop a folder of photos into a sway and get back something that looked like a tumblr post with a brand. the embed system was decent for hosting inside teams or sharepoint. the export to pdf came later than it should have.

none of that solved the basic problem. teachers who tried sway for student handouts went back to powerpoint or google slides because the rest of the school used those. marketing teams who tried sway for landing pages went back to a real cms. the people sway was built for did not exist as a discrete user segment, they were just powerpoint users who occasionally wanted a website.

~ the slow retirement ~

sway never had a single shutdown announcement. it had a sequence of removals. the ios app was discontinued on december 17 2018 and the public roadmap had already gone silent two years before that. the "create new" entry was pulled from the microsoft 365 copilot create tab in late march 2025, which moved sway from a default option into the long tail of apps inside the launcher. the desktop app for windows retired june 1 2026 with the same notice that microsoft was redirecting everyone to the web client.

~ what it became ~

the web app at sway.cloud.microsoft is technically still on. you can sign in and create a sway in 2026, the existing content people uploaded is still accessible. but the product is in the dormant phase, no new features and no marketing slot. powerpoint designer and microsoft designer absorbed the actual job sway was built for, the auto-layout intelligence got rolled into them. sway sits beside [[office-mix]] in the small museum of office 365 add-ons that microsoft kept in the launcher long after the team that built it had moved on.
