QuickTime for Windows
~ the last words ~
quicktime for windows showed up on every pc i installed itunes on between 2003 and around 2011. you did not choose to install it. it came inside the itunes setup wizard as a "required component" and dropped a folder under program files plus a quicktime preferences pane in the windows control panel. that pane stayed there even after you uninstalled itunes years later. removing quicktime cleanly was a known windows folk skill.
apple released the first quicktime for windows in november 1994, fifteen months after the mac version. the goal was straightforward: apple's own video format was.mov, and apple did not want.mov to be a mac-only format that nobody could open. windows had video for windows with the.avi container, and microsoft was clearly going to keep pushing that. quicktime on windows existed so apple could keep its codec story alive on the dominant desktop os.
through the late 90s and early 2000s, quicktime had a real role on windows beyond just playing apple's files. apple's trailers.apple.com hosted hd movie trailers in quicktime format before youtube was a meaningful video destination, and downloading a 480p.mov of a movie trailer over ttnet broadband around 2005 was a thing people did. you opened the trailer, watched it twice, then went back to msn.
~ the record ~
| Born | November 1994 |
|---|---|
| Peak | bundled with iTunes for Windows from 2003 to ~2011, default.mov handler globally |
| Killed | April 14, 2016 (Apple ended security support, US-CERT TA16-105A) |
| Lifespan | 22 years |
| Made by | Apple |
| Killed by | Two unpatched zero-days + Apple no longer caring about Windows users |
~ how it landed ~
the bundle with itunes is what put quicktime on tens of millions of windows pcs. itunes was the only way to put music on an ipod, so every household with an ipod ended up with itunes installed. itunes for windows refused to launch without quicktime present. the install dialog warned you that itunes "required" quicktime and offered no opt-out. apple split the two installers eventually with itunes 10.5 in 2011, but by then a decade of bundled installs had already happened.
quicktime on windows had a reputation for being heavier than it needed to be. the player ran a background updater service called "apple software update" that nagged about itunes patches even on machines where the user had no apple device. uninstalling quicktime through add/remove programs would leave behind the updater. a small ecosystem of third-party "remove apple software bloat from windows" guides grew up around this. the program worked, but the experience around the program was hostile.
~ the actual end ~
on april 14, 2016 trend micro's zero day initiative published two unpatched critical vulnerabilities in quicktime for windows. both could be exploited by getting a user to open a malicious.mov file or visit a page that auto-loaded one. apple confirmed that day that it would no longer ship security updates for the windows version. us-cert issued alert ta16-105a within hours, with a single recommendation: uninstall quicktime from any windows machine.
that was the end. quicktime 7.7.9 from 2016 stayed downloadable for a while as a final compatibility build, but every security advice channel was telling people to remove it. inside corporate it departments quicktime got mass-uninstalled by group policy in the days after the cve disclosure. on home machines it stuck around longer because nobody read security bulletins. by 2018 windows 10 was actively refusing to run quicktime cleanly on newer builds.
~ the long tail ~
the.mov format itself did not die with the windows player. the format was based on the same container apple used to standardize mp4, and modern players like vlc and mpc-hc can open.mov files without going near apple's code. itunes itself eventually dropped the dependency on quicktime altogether and was finally retired on windows in favor of separate apple music and apple tv apps in 2025. the codec story apple was protecting in 1994 ended up winning quietly through h.264 and h.265, which inherited a lot of mov's design.
quicktime for windows remains the cleanest example of apple shipping something on a platform it actively did not care about. the product was a tactical concession to the windows era. the moment apple no longer needed windows users to stay inside the apple media universe, the security work stopped. an unpatched binary on millions of pcs got handed off to whatever malware would eventually find it.
