Prime Try Before You Buy

2017 - 2025

prime try before you buy started life as prime wardrobe in june 2017. the pitch was simple: prime members could order up to six clothing or footwear items, keep them at home for seven days, then pay only for the ones they wanted to keep. amazon closed the whole thing on 31 january 2025 and pointed customers instead at ai-driven virtual try-on and size recommendations. the service was available in the us, uk, germany, japan and three southern european markets. turkey was never on the list.

~ the obituary ~

in 2017 i was buying clothes the normal turkish way. koton, lc waikiki, occasional online orders from trendyol. amazon prime wardrobe launched in the us that june as an invite-only beta. prime members could order up to six items in a single box, keep them for a week, then send back what did not fit. only kept items were charged. the whole shape was aimed at the stitch fix category without the stylist middleman.

turkey was never on the list of countries where the service ran. amazon.com.tr does not exist as a full storefront and prime turkey uses a stripped-down feature set. from ankara the try-before-you-buy program was one of the things a friend on a us prime account would mention as a pleasant amazon perk. i understood the mechanics without ever seeing the checkout page.

the rename to prime try before you buy came in 2021, the same year amazon added france, italy, and spain to the country list beside the earlier us, uk, germany and japan launches. an add-on called personal shopper ran at 4 dollars 99 cents a month for a while and offered curated boxes from a real stylist. that piece was cut before the main program was.

~ how it worked ~

you filtered the eligible catalog to try-on items, added up to six to a wardrobe box, and picked a delivery date. amazon shipped everything in a single reusable box with a prepaid return label inside. the seven-day clock started on delivery. anything you wanted to keep, you clicked keep. anything else went back in the same box. billing settled at the end of the window.

the friction was small enough that a lot of us prime users treated it as a normal shopping mode for clothing. that was also the problem for amazon. the return rate was high, the fulfillment cost per box was real, and the eligible catalog was capped to items amazon felt safe underwriting for tryout.

~ the day it died ~

amazon told cnbc on 10 january 2025 that the whole program would end on 31 january. the reasoning was corporate but honest: try before you buy had never scaled beyond a limited slice of the catalog, and amazon had shipped ai-driven virtual try-on, size recommendations and review-highlight summaries that shifted the same job onto the product page. andy jassy's cost review had already cleared out amazon halo, amazon glow, amazon care and the physical amazon books and 4-star stores. this was the same line, one more year on.

stitch fix is still running in the us. the try-before-you-buy category as a whole never really left the mid-2010s, and the biggest player kept it going without amazon's help.

~ what carried over ~

the interesting inheritance is the ai stack amazon shipped as the replacement. virtual try-on renders shoes and glasses on your phone camera. size recommendations pull from purchase and return data across the catalog. review highlights condense thousands of size complaints into a paragraph. those features are meant to do the same job try before you buy did with a physical box. whether they actually do is a longer question.
