~ the obituary ~
playfish's peak years overlap almost exactly with my last two years of university and my first year of full-time work, but i was inside a computer engineering program and then a defense-adjacent job in ankara, not inside the london facebook-games scene. i never played a playfish title. i knew the name because pet society and sims social kept generating wall posts in my feed, and later because the ea acquisition price kept surfacing in trade-press articles about the collapse of the facebook-canvas gaming bubble.
the studio was founded in october 2007 in london by kristian segerstrale, sebastien de halleux, sami lababidi, and shukri shammas. all four had backgrounds in mobile gaming and the european casual-games space. the thesis was direct: facebook had opened its platform to third-party apps in may 2007, and whichever studio figured out the social loop first would take a very large share of a category that did not yet exist. playfish shipped a string of small titles first (who has the biggest brain, geo challenge, word challenge, several others) then broke through with pet society in september 2008 and restaurant city in april 2009.
by mid-2009 the studio was at fifty-five million monthly users, second in the category only to zynga. ea acquired playfish on 9 november 2009 for four hundred million dollars total, structured as two hundred and seventy-five million in upfront cash plus another hundred and twenty-five million in equity and performance milestones. the acquisition was the largest social-game deal in the industry at that point.

~ the climb ~
playfish's design vocabulary was different from zynga's. the zynga titles were tuned around aggressive monetization loops and pay-to-progress gating. playfish's games were cosmetic-monetization titles built around cute art direction, daily-return loops, and social gifting. pet society is the archetype: you visited a friend's house and left them a small gift, they returned the visit and left one for you. the paid currency, playfish cash, bought seasonal outfits and limited-edition items rather than progress unlocks.
this design language traveled well across the studio's catalog. restaurant city peaked at eighteen million monthly users on a cook-serve loop with the same cosmetic-monetization pattern. hotel city, my empire, gangster city, poker rivals shipped in 2010 to 2011. the ea acquisition brought playfish access to established franchises, so 2011 to 2012 saw madden nfl superstars, ea sports fifa superstars, then the two big franchise adaptations to the facebook canvas: the sims social in august 2011 and simcity social in june 2012.
~ the slide ~
the sims social hit sixty-five million registered players in its first months, then collapsed to five hundred thousand actives by early 2013. simcity social launched into a facebook canvas that facebook itself was actively depriving of newsfeed distribution. player-acquisition costs across the whole category quadrupled between 2011 and 2013 as facebook turned off viral loop after viral loop. the playfish design vocabulary, which had worked when players were arriving organically through friend broadcasts, did not have a paid-acquisition version.
inside ea, the playfish leadership left in waves. sebastien de halleux was gone by 2012. kristian segerstrale left in early 2013 and eventually surfaced as ceo of super evil megacorp on the mobile side. by february 2013 all four founders had exited. the remaining staff were reassigned to other ea groups or laid off.
~ the day it died ~
ea announced on 15 april 2013 that pet society and the sims social would shut down on 14 june, alongside simcity social. these were the last three playfish titles still generating meaningful revenue. the servers closed on schedule for sims social and simcity social, three days late for pet society. one final ea sports title, madden nfl 13 social, hung on until 2 september 2013 before its own shutdown notice. after that the studio effectively did not exist.
the trade-press write-ups afterward were unanimous on the diagnosis. ea had bought a studio at the exact top of the facebook-canvas cycle, then watched the platform underneath rewrite the discovery rules faster than the studio could adapt. the four-hundred-million-dollar price tag became a case study in how platform-dependent game studios are worth less than their peak numbers suggest, because the platform owner sets the rules and can revise them per quarter.
~ what got left ~
the playfish design vocabulary survived in the mobile casual-game generation that arrived after 2013. the cute art direction and cosmetic-monetization approach now live inside titles like animal crossing pocket camp, neko atsume, and the endless run of pet-collecting mobile games that fill the app store. kristian segerstrale's later studios kept some of the same design instincts. the specific facebook-canvas era that playfish defined does not have a modern equivalent, mostly because facebook itself does not host that category anymore.
