patagon was the first major online brokerage built for the latin american retail investor. wenceslao casares started it in buenos aires in 1997. on 9 march 2000, three days into the nasdaq peak, banco santander central hispano paid $548 million for 75 percent of the company. by may 2002 santander had written down most of the position and sold patagon america back to casares and guillermo kirchner for $9.84 million. the brand was retired across the americas and europe in 2005.

in march 2000 i was sixteen, on a 56k connection in ankara, the ttnet bill still my parents' problem. patagon.com was the argentine fintech that wenceslao casares had built into a regional broker and that santander had just paid more than half a billion dollars for. i did not know any of that at the time. latam dot-com deals did not surface on the turkish tech press i was reading.

casares had started patagon in buenos aires in 1997. the original idea was a localized online brokerage for argentine retail investors who could not get a discount-brokerage experience from the high-street banks. the product was a web front end on top of a clearing relationship, in the same lineage as the early e-trade and ameritrade builds in the us, just translated into spanish and tuned for buenos aires settlement timing.

the march 2000 deal was the entire story. santander central hispano paid $548 million for a 75 percent stake on 9 march. the nasdaq peaked on 10 march. by the time the deal cleared the formal regulatory channels, the valuation comparables had already started collapsing. santander wound up putting more than $750 million of total capital into the patagon venture across the americas and europe before it admitted the loss.

~ the origin ~

patagon's argentine product had real traction. by 1999 it was the dominant local online broker by account count, and the brand had pushed across the river into uruguay and chile, with a brazilian launch underway. the casares pitch was that latin america would skip the discount-broker phone era and go straight to web-native investing, the way the region had skipped fixed-line for mobile in some markets.

santander wanted that thesis on its balance sheet. the spanish bank had opened openbank in 1994 as its own european online experiment, but a homegrown latin-language broker with traction in buenos aires looked like the cheaper way to plant a flag across spanish-speaking markets. the price reflected enthusiasm, not the underlying revenue.

~ how it actually ended ~

the argentine financial crisis of 2001 hit while santander was still trying to integrate the company. the peso collapsed, the corralito froze bank deposits, and a latin american online brokerage was suddenly a vertical that had no retail equity flows to clear. santander started restructuring patagon in late 2001 and announced in may 2002 that it had sold patagon america back to casares and kirchner for $9.84 million. one news clip from the period described the buyback price as a writedown of roughly 95 percent against the original headline number.

the european arm dragged on for another three years. santander rebranded most of the customer flows into openbank and quietly retired the patagon name across europe and the americas by the end of 2005. there was no formal funeral. the domain stopped resolving to an investment product and the brand fell out of circulation.

~ what got buried with it ~

casares went on to build other companies in fintech and eventually bitcoin custody. patagon stayed important in latam startup memory as the first truly large exit out of a buenos aires internet company, and as a warning that dot-com cycle valuations could turn against a founder even after the cash had cleared. for santander the lesson got folded into openbank, which is now the bank's european digital arm.

the cleanest way to think about patagon is as a casualty of timing. the product was real, the market was real, the operator was capable. the bank wrote a check at the top of a cycle on a thesis that survived two more decades of market work. that does not make a company live longer than its acquisition window.
