~ the obituary ~
panfu sits in the corner of internet history i can read about but was never going to remember. a virtual world for six-to-fourteen-year-olds that peaked in europe while i was already an adult writing code. wrong age, adjacent region, no overlap i can honestly claim.
it opened to the public on december 1 2007, made by a berlin studio called young internet, later renamed goodbeans. you made a panda and explored an island called panfu, the standard kids-mmo loop of mini-games and a home you decorated with a currency you earned, plus a chat kept on a short leash by filters. it grew fast. six weeks after launch it had passed 300,000 registered members.
by june 2009 it claimed around ten million users and the title of biggest children's virtual world in europe, eventually running in more than a dozen countries. turkey had its own kids online, habbo otel put out a turkish version for the middle-school crowd, but i was already too old for that world when it landed and panfu never had a turkish moment i can point to. i know it the way i know most of these, through the wikipedia page and the fan wiki that outlived the game.

| Killed by | studio bankruptcy in 2015 and the decline of flash kids-mmos |
~ the slide ~
the money stopped adding up around 2013, as the whole flash-based kids-mmo category started to sag under mobile apps and free youtube. panfu turned off its chat when activity dropped too low to moderate cheaply, which for a social world is close to switching off the lights. the studio, goodbeans, filed for bankruptcy in 2015.
~ the day it died ~
there was no big farewell. after the bankruptcy the team decided to leave the servers running until the domain simply expired, and in november 2016 they went offline for good. a game that many millions of children had passed through ended by running out the clock.
~ the long tail ~
flash died in 2020 and took most of these worlds with it, but panfu, like club penguin and toontown, got a second life from its own players. community-run private servers rebuilt the island from preserved files, and a small number of grown adults still log in to a panda world that its owners abandoned a decade ago.
