OZ Re:write

2025 - 2026
dead asia
the title was settled in april 2024 and the servers ran from 19 august 2025 to 21 april 2026. macovill built it and drimage published it on the pitch of a playable anime, with cel-look animation running through the story and the battles and an in-game social network where the cast sent the player direct messages. players were also asked to help invent characters, and the first one they co-designed shipped in september with seven months left on the clock.

~ the goodbye ~

On 4 September 2025, two weeks after launch, the game announced a character the players had helped design. She was called Otohime, she was voiced by Naomi Ohzora, and she came out of a program the studio called co-creation, where the setting and personality of a new character were worked out together with the people playing. The game had seven months left to live at that point, though nobody in the stream knew it.

OZ Re:write opened on the Japanese iOS and Android stores on 19 August 2025. MACOVILL developed it and DRIMAGE published it, a company that had been called HYBE IM until the rename, which makes this the game arm of the label behind BTS shipping a fantasy RPG into Japan. The world was modern civilization fused with a fairy-tale continent called Märchen, divided into seven parts under seven witches, with the player cast as the Founder, the one whose imagination writes things into existence. Fights were semi-automatic, so you could play without touching much, but the party composition and the attribute and class systems underneath were there for people who wanted them.

The concept the studio kept repeating was "playable anime". Two-dimensional cel-look animation ran through the story scenes and into the battles themselves, and the main story was voiced from end to end. There was also an in-game social network called Mirrorgram, where the characters posted and sent the player direct messages, which is a 2025 idea about what intimacy with a fictional cast is supposed to feel like.

~ the co-creation ~

The project was announced as Project OZ and given its real title on 22 April 2024. A connection test ran from 5 to 12 March 2025. There was a pre-launch offline event on 27 July, and the first official livestream after release went out on 3 September under a name that translates as the Founders' Meeting. Otohime came out of that stretch.

Asking players to help build a character is a real commitment on both sides. They put in the ideas and the publisher puts in the voice actress and the animation budget, and whatever comes out is owned by one party and loved by the other. The people who did that work for Otohime got to play her for about seven months.

~ sixty-seven days ~

DRIMAGE announced the shutdown on 13 February 2026 and closed the service sixty-seven days later, on 21 April, which the trade press measured at about eight months from launch. A game that spent sixteen months between its title reveal and its first paying player lasted half that long once it was open.

The written record is correspondingly thin. The Japanese Wikipedia article was flagged in September 2025, one month into the game's life, for leaning on primary sources and for reading like promotion. The flag is itself a measurement: there was almost nothing written about this game that the publisher had not written itself.

~ present tense ~

Most of what sits on this site is memory. This one is news. It launched in a year I was already forty-one and working on drones, it was published by DRIMAGE JAPAN into the Japanese stores only, and there was no version of it to find from Turkey even if I had wanted one. I am writing about it six months after it closed, which is not enough time for any personal distance to have formed.
