Senki Zesshou Symphogear XD Unlimited

bushiroad and kingpawn put the notice up on 30 november 2023 and gave the game two months. it closed at two in the afternoon on 31 january 2024, six years and seven months after it opened, which is a long life for a phone game bolted to an anime. the part worth keeping is in the middle: in the summer of 2022 the whole operation was handed from pokelabo to kingpawn, development and distribution included, and it ran another nineteen months under the new hands. no reason for the ending was ever published.

~ the goodbye ~

Symphogear XD Unlimited opened on 26 June 2017 as a free-to-play phone RPG with item billing, distributed under the Bushimo label that later became Bushiroad Games. It wanted iOS 9 or Android 4.4, which dates it precisely. Elements Garden wrote the music, as they had for the anime the game was built on.

The anime is the context. Senki Zesshou Symphogear is a franchise about girls who sing to fight, five seasons of it, and the mobile game arrived as the thing a franchise does when it has an audience and no new season in the broadcast schedule. Those games usually last two years. This one lasted six years and seven months, and gamebiz did the arithmetic in its own closure report because the number was the story.

Bushiroad and Kingpawn announced the ending on 30 November 2023: service off at 2pm on 31 January 2024. The notice promised an offline build carrying some of the features. No cause was given, then or later, which is the normal shape of these announcements and still worth saying out loud.

~ the handover ~

On 1 July 2022 both the operation and the development side moved from Pokelabo to Kingpawn, announced about five weeks earlier with a note about transferring player data. Bushiroad stayed on top as the planning and production side. Pokelabo had built and run it for five years.

I did not play this and would not have noticed it closing. The handover is what held me, because it is the part of a live-service death that reads like an engineering document rather than a fandom one: somebody packaged up a running game with every account and every balance inside it, moved the whole thing to a different company, and the players kept logging in through the seam. That worked for nineteen more months.

~ sixty days' notice ~

Two months between announcement and switch-off is generous by the standards of the form. Japanese mobile games have closed on three weeks. What two months buys is time for players to spend what they are holding and screenshot the parts they want to keep. Screenshots are most of what a server-side game leaves its own audience.

~ the offline build ~

The closure report said an app with some features usable offline would follow, and the Japanese Wikipedia article says in its overview that one was distributed. Its own summary of the sources says only that one was planned, so the record disagrees with itself on whether the promise was kept.

Either way, an offline build of a gacha is a strange object. The loop the game was designed around was pulling new characters out of a paid machine connected to someone else's server, and that loop is exactly the part that cannot be shipped in a package. What is left runs, and it does not grow.
