~ the obituary ~
the olympic channel had a us cable version and a global streaming version, and only the us cable version is properly dead. i watched olympics coverage on trt in turkey through the athens and beijing cycles, then on eurosport and digiturk later on. an ioc-branded off-cycle channel with athlete documentaries and world championships between games was not on my carriage anywhere. this is the us cable feed's obit, not the global brand's.
the ioc launched the olympic channel as a global streaming service on 21 august 2016, right after the rio closing ceremony, with a seven-year six hundred million dollar budget. yiannis exarchos, the greek producer behind olympic broadcasting services, led the operation out of madrid. the idea was to fight the four-year attention gap that killed most non-olympics-year olympic marketing.
the us linear cable version came a year later, on 15 july 2017. it took the slot vacated by universal hd on the nbcuniversal cable lineup and reached about forty-five million us homes at launch. between rio 2016 and tokyo 2020 the channel filled its schedule with world championship coverage and athlete documentaries. the tokyo games slipped to 2021 during covid, and by then the channel had already lost carriage as us cord-cutting accelerated. nbcuniversal announced the shutdown on 22 june 2022 and pulled the linear feed on 30 september 2022.

~ what it was for ~
the ioc problem the channel was built to solve is real. the summer olympics happen once every four years. the winter olympics run on the same cycle offset by two years. between those windows, most viewers do not think about the olympics. athletes go back to living on prize money and sponsorships that dry up between games. sponsors have no ongoing brand impressions to point to during the three years the games are not the main story.
the olympic channel tried to be the always-on marketing layer that kept the flame lit between games. profiles of qualifying athletes across the summer and winter olympic sports. sports-specific coverage of the world championships that most us networks would not carry because they did not draw ratings. the global streaming version at olympicchannel.com and later olympics.com did that at scale. the us cable version was a specific bet that keeping a linear channel in the bundle would broaden that mission into households that did not seek out streaming.
~ what really happened ~
the us linear channel was always under structural pressure. nbc sports network shut down at the end of 2021, a bigger and higher-profile cable channel with more affiliates. once the parent nbc sports network was gone, the smaller olympic channel had less bundle logic keeping it alive. nbcuniversal announced in june 2022 that the linear channel would end at the close of the third quarter, with programming moving to peacock and youtube tv. the shutdown date was 30 september 2022. tokyo 2020 had aired the prior summer, and beijing 2022 had already come and gone that february. no more olympic games were on the near-term calendar, so the pull-forward hurt less than it might have otherwise.
~ what it became ~
the ioc's global streaming brand kept running as olympics.com and streams into 2026 with paris 2024 archival and milano-cortina 2026 pre-games coverage. peacock now carries the us-market olympic streaming rights end to end. the linear cable version of the always-on olympic marketing channel simply stopped being economical to run once cable itself started shrinking. the tokyo 2020 and beijing 2022 games are the two olympic games the us cable channel was designed to serve. paris 2024 came after the linear feed had already shut down.
