~ the obituary ~
nbc direct never reached turkey at any layer. it was geo-locked to US IPs the way most prime-time network content of the era was, and even the US-side client was windows-only with a drm wrapper that deleted the file seven days after broadcast. two gates that ruled out anyone outside the broadcast region or off a windows desktop. i was on the wrong side of both gates and so was about ninety percent of the actual nbc audience.
the service launched in october 2007 as a beta with a public push in november that year. the pitch was a "download manager" application you installed on a windows pc, then queued up prime-time shows like heroes or 30 rock to pull down overnight on your home connection. close enough. the files came in standard definition first, then hd in the second iteration. you watched them in a custom player that enforced the seven-day window. on day eight the file would not open.
hulu launched the same month nbc direct went public. hulu was a joint venture between news corp and nbc universal that delivered the same prime-time content in a browser with no install, no client, no expiry. nbc was funding both products at once. one of them required a tutorial, the other one worked. by march 2008 hulu was open to anyone in the US with a flash plugin and a free account.
nbc kept retrying direct anyway. a second version shipped in 2008, a third one in february 2009 with hd support and a new ui. engadget covered each relaunch with diminishing enthusiasm. the october 2010 shutdown happened quietly, no farewell post, the download links were removed and the support page was redirected to nbc.com. anyway, the brand was dead by the time anyone noticed.

~ the drm trap ~
the seven-day rule was the part that lost it. the underlying logic was a 2007 licensing deal: nbc could give you the file for free if the file did not become a permanent copy. the protected windows media file would phone home for an authorization token. without the token the player threw a license error and the bytes on disk were inert. you could not move the file to another machine or copy it to a usb drive without breaking the wrapper.
the windows-only constraint was the other part. the macromedia-stack hulu used was cross-platform out of the box. nbc direct's player was a c# desktop application that needed windows media drm services running. mac users were locked out from day one. linux too. by 2008 macs were a non-trivial chunk of the US prime-time audience and the omission was getting harder to explain. but yeah, anyway.
~ how it actually ended ~
nbc never published a real shutdown notice. the support links went dark in october 2010 and the application stopped phoning home for license renewals. the third-iteration client kept opening for about a week after that and then started failing on every file. people on tv-forum threads at the time noticed it was gone before nbc admitted it.
the official line was that hulu had absorbed the function. comcast was finishing its acquisition of nbc universal that same year and the post-merger media strategy did not include a parallel download client. peacock would not arrive until 2020, almost a decade later. in between, nbc's online-video story was hulu and nothing else.
~ the long tail ~
nbc direct sits in the same shelf as cbs's similar download experiment innertube and abc's full episode player before the hulu deal pulled the networks together. the download-and-expire model was a 2006-2008 transitional pattern, an attempt to ship streaming inside a piracy-aware drm cage. by 2011 the whole pattern was obsolete, every network was on a hulu-shaped browser stream or a netflix-shaped subscription.
hulu itself outlived everyone, though disney has been merging it into disney+ since 2024. in those days. the joint venture that killed nbc direct will eventually die under disney's consolidation, the same way nbc direct died under hulu's. that part of network-tv's online-video history is two layers of corporate consolidation deep at this point.
