Newtoki / Manatoki / Booktoki

2018 - 2026
dead asia
the largest illegal korean webtoon piracy hub and its two sister sites. ran from 2018 to april 27, 2026, killed by an operator who saw the emergency blocking law coming. monthly traffic across the three brands exceeded 100 million visits at shutdown.

~ the last words ~

newtoki sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. the site opened in 2018, picking up the audience of bamtoki after korean authorities dismantled that earlier piracy hub. by the mid 2020s newtoki and its sister sites manatoki and booktoki together carried more than 100 million monthly visits, mostly korean webtoons, japanese manga and web novels uploaded as raw scans within hours of release (close enough).

the three brands shared infrastructure and a roughly identical layout. newtoki handled the webtoons, manatoki ran the japanese manga and booktoki carried web novels. for many overseas readers chasing the latest chapter of a serializing webtoon, the network was the default raw source before any translator group picked the title up.

the operator, a korean national who reportedly took japanese citizenship in 2022, kept the network alive across multiple domain seizures and police actions. the ministry of culture estimated monthly illicit revenue around 40 billion won at the peak, which is the scale where an "illegal piracy site" becomes a small media company with ad sales.

i did not read korean webtoons in their raw form. the closest i ever got to this corner of piracy was bittorrent and the irc fansub channels of the mid 2000s, both english speaking and both an ocean and a decade away from the newtoki audience (close enough). the network was korean-speaking at the interface layer and that alone walled it off from the english western piracy graveyard.

~ what really happened ~

on april 27, 2026 the operator posted a short notice. the site would remain accessible until midnight local time. all user data would be deleted and there would be no plan to resume service. by midnight the three brands were gone.

the timing was the point. on may 11, 2026 south korea's "emergency blocking system" took effect under a revised copyright law from the ministry of culture, sports and tourism. it let authorities block infringing sites within hours of detection, without the lengthy review process that had let newtoki survive for years. the operator did the math two weeks ahead of the deadline and walked away.

~ the long tail ~

this part you had to be in korean fandom for, and i was not. within days a site branded as newtoki reappeared at a new domain, then disappeared again under the new blocking rule. by june 12, 2026 korean authorities had extradited the alleged 37-year-old operator from japan via gimpo international airport under the korea-japan extradition treaty. it is the first major successful extradition of a piracy hub operator from that direction.

a webtoon artist interviewed in june 2026 said their revenue tripled after the shutdown (or whatever it was called). that single data point lands harder than any policy claim. for once a piracy hub closing was followed by an immediate visible move in legal payouts to the people whose work had been getting uploaded raw at midnight.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.

"too bad. the freedom to read couldn’t coexist with the right to earn of writers. or, is else there a reason; elsewhere an answer eluding our eyes? but enough drama, rip booktoki orz"
