~ the obit ~
nbc sports gold sold one sport at a time, and that was the entire product. you did not buy a channel and you did not buy a bundle. you bought cycling, or you bought the premier league, and what arrived was the coverage the television schedule had no room for.
it started on 9 june 2016, when nbc took an app it had built for tour de france coverage and gave it a name that could hold more than one thing. the cycling pass cost $29.99 for the year and covered the tour de france, the vuelta, paris-roubaix and the rest of the one-day monuments, races american television had always handled as a thirty minute recap at midnight. the pitch was aimed at the sort of viewer who already knew what a breakaway was and did not need it explained.
the model expanded fast because it fit the shape of nbc's rights portfolio. premier league pass came in 2017 at fifty dollars, carrying around 130 matches a season that appeared on no nbc channel at all. notre dame football went for $49.99 a season or $9.99 for a single game. then track and field, rugby, supercross, pro motocross, indycar, speed skating, snow, pga tour live. each one a separate checkout, each one aimed at an audience too small to justify a slot on cable but large enough to bill directly.
almost all of it was united states only at the rights layer, which is where this stops being a service and starts being a map. the premier league reached turkey through whichever pay tv package held the rights that season, and the tour de france through whatever eurosport was doing. gold's geography was drawn by lawyers rather than by cable, and from ankara the whole thing was a login screen that told you no. the two exceptions are the funny part: pro motocross was the first pass sold outside the united states, and the notre dame football pass was sold only outside it.

~ the rise ~
what gold actually proved is that a rights holder can go straight past the distributor. for decades the value of a sport was measured by whether a cable network would carry it, which meant cycling and lacrosse lived on whatever was left over. gold priced them individually and discovered that a niche will pay a premium for completeness. nobody pays fifty dollars for one hundred and thirty premier league matches unless the alternative is missing them.
the cost of that was a subscriber base fragmented into fifteen pieces that did not talk to each other. a person with a cycling pass and a supercross pass had two subscriptions from the same company, and nbc had two relationships with one household. that arithmetic is fine while you have no general streaming product. it is untenable the moment you launch one.
~ the postmortem ~
peacock launched widely in july 2020 and the unwinding started immediately. the premier league moved to peacock premium for the 2020-21 season, taking the largest single audience with it. the rest followed over the next eighteen months, and where peacock did not want something it went elsewhere. nascar's regional series ended up at floracing and american flat track at fox sports.
the closing date is 31 december 2021, the same day nbcsn switched off after twenty-six years. that is not a coincidence so much as one decision showing up twice. nbcuniversal decided in january 2021 that its sports future was one streaming service and one cable slot on usa network, and both the boutique product and the dedicated channel were surplus to that. nbcsportsgold.com now answers nothing at all.
~ the long tail ~
the idea outlived the brand, which is the usual pattern. buying access to one sport for one season is now ordinary, and every league with a direct-to-consumer app is running the gold model without the name. what died was the belief that the passes should be separate purchases from the same company. the industry decided the bundle was better after all and priced it monthly. the niche sports went inside it, where they became a line in a features list rather than a thing anyone chose.
