~ the obituary ~
i missed narod.ru. it was the russian-language free hosting platform of its decade and i was on the english-language equivalent, geocities, then briefly tripod, then a friend's dial-up shell account at uludag. the cyrillic web ran a parallel internet during the late 1990s and 2000s that did not show up in my browser history because google did not yet route me into russian results and i did not know any russian. narod existed at the same scale geocities did, in a language i could not read.
yandex launched narod in 2000 as a free hosting service tied to the russian search engine. the deal was a free subdomain on narod.ru with unlimited storage over ftp, plus a small set of templates if you did not want to write html yourself. the cyrillic web at the time had very few options for putting up a personal page without paying for hosting, and narod took most of that demand. by the mid-2000s the platform was the obvious place to host a fan site or a small business homepage, anything where a free narod.ru/yourname url was acceptable. by december 2010 yandex was claiming over three million sites on the platform.
the underlying business problem was the same one that killed geocities four years earlier. free hosting at scale costs real money to run, and the monetization model was always either banner ads on user pages or upsell to paid plans, neither of which paid for the infrastructure. yandex had moved its file storage attention to yandex.disk by 2010 and quietly stripped the social features off narod, with guest books and visitor counters going dark in august 2009. on january 31, 2013 yandex announced the platform was being handed to ucoz, the russian site-builder company that had been the market leader anyway.

~ what it was ~
narod sat in the exact same product category as the late-1990s american free-hosting cluster, the one with geocities and tripod and the others. you got a free subdomain. you got file space and a basic html editor. if you wanted something fancier you uploaded your own files over ftp. the result was a long tail of millions of small personal russian sites, most of them looking the same way personal geocities sites looked, with animated gifs and frames and visitor counters that always seemed to say you were the 14,287th visitor.
the platform had a small but distinct subculture. russian fan sites for anime and for soviet-era music ran on narod for years, alongside niche literary translation projects. some of the earliest russian blog-style personal sites were narod pages. the russian-language internet ran on a different stack from the western web, with mail.ru and rambler and yandex doing what google and yahoo did in the west, and narod was the geocities-shaped slot in that arrangement.
~ the next chapter ~
the migration to ucoz happened in two waves. sites built with the narod "workshop" tool got transferred on april 8, 2013. sites built with the "constructor" tool got transferred on april 25. the narod.ru subdomain kept resolving, but the pages were now hosted on ucoz infrastructure under ucoz tooling. file storage and email on the narod.ru domain stayed under yandex. for most users the migration was opaque, with the page still loading at the same url. for power users the change was real, since the underlying admin panel was now ucoz's interface and the ucoz business model included more ads on free-tier pages than narod had.
ucoz still exists in 2026 as a russian site-builder. some of the migrated narod pages are also still there, surviving past their original creators in a way that mirrors the oocities mirror of geocities. you can sometimes find a small fan site that has not been updated since 2008 and is still loading because nobody told ucoz to delete it. that is the inheritance.
