the napster brand had a long second life as a streaming service. roxio bought the corpse in 2002 and launched napster 2.0 in october 2003 as a paid music store. ownership passed through best buy, rhapsody, melodyvr, and finally infinite reality. on 1 january 2026 infinite reality cut subscribers off mid-playback and pivoted the brand to an ai music tool.

the napster brand had two lives. the first one was the file-sharing service shawn fanning wrote in his dorm in 1999. the second one was a paid music streaming product that ran under five different owners between 2003 and 2026. the original napster died in june 2002. the streaming napster died on 1 january 2026, when infinite reality, the latest owner, cut subscribers off mid-playback.

users opened the app on new year's day and instead of the music player got a splash screen that read "napster is no longer a music streaming service. we've become an ai platform for creating and experiencing music in new ways." playlists, libraries, downloaded tracks, the entire catalog access stopped responding. the official guidance was to use a third-party tool called tunemymusic to migrate playlists out to spotify or apple music. there was no advance notice and no wind-down window. the streaming service ended in the middle of a song.

infinite reality had bought napster in march 2025 for $207 million. the buyer specialized in ai and immersive digital experiences. napster the brand had been sliding into the bottom tier of paid music streaming for a decade, and it was unclear who the seven-dollar-a-month subscribers were paying for. infinite reality's plan was to convert the brand into an ai music tool. step one was to turn the music off.

~ how it became a streaming service ~

the napster brand was bought out of bankruptcy by roxio in 2002 and relaunched on 29 october 2003 as napster 2.0, a paid download store competing with the itunes store. best buy bought it for $121 million in 2008, then merged it with rhapsody in 2011 while keeping a minority stake. rhapsody ran the combined company until 2016, when it dropped the rhapsody name and rebranded back to napster. melodyvr bought the brand in 2020 with a plan to combine streaming and vr concerts. infinite reality bought it from melodyvr in march 2025 with a plan to pivot to ai. each owner had a different story for what the name was supposed to mean next.

~ the day it died ~

1 january 2026 was a thursday. infinite reality flipped the switch sometime during the day. there had been no advance email warning subscribers. paying customers found out by trying to listen to music and getting the splash screen instead. infinite reality had told stakeholders two months earlier that a $3.3 billion funding package had fallen through, and the cost of continuing as a mid-tier subscription music service stopped being supportable. the streaming portion of the brand was the line item that got cut first.

~ honest distance ~

the original napster, the file-sharing one from 1999 to 2002, is the one i remember. anyone with a 56k modem in turkey in 2001 knew what napster meant. the streaming version that came after was a different product wearing the same name. it never had any cultural footprint in turkey that i noticed. the rebranded napster lived in the long tail of paid music apps somewhere behind spotify, apple music, deezer, and youtube music. its death matters as the end of a brand, not as the end of a service that was still mattering.
