Microsoft Surface Duo

2020 - 2024
dead us
surface duo was microsoft's quiet return to phone hardware, four years after microsoft wrote off the lumia line. it was a dual-screen android device with two 5.6 inch oled panels on a 360-degree hinge. it cost $1,399 at launch on 10 september 2020, got a duo 2 successor in october 2021 at $1,499, and got its final security update on 21 october 2024. microsoft never shipped a duo 3 and never said why.

~ the obituary ~

i did not know anyone who owned a surface duo. that part is not honest distance hedging. the device was not sold through turkish operators or stocked by media markt and vatan in ankara. you saw it in reviews on the verge and windows central. you did not see one in person.

the duo was microsoft's first piece of phone hardware after the lumia writedown. panos panay was careful never to call it a phone. he called it a surface, or a folding canvas. it ran android with google mobile services because microsoft had given up on writing its own mobile os four years earlier. the physical object was two 5.6 inch oled displays joined by a 360-degree hinge that let the thing fold flat or open like a tiny book.

the original duo launched on 10 september 2020 at $1,399. the duo 2 launched on 21 october 2021 at $1,499 with 5g, a real triple camera, and a slightly faster chip. microsoft ended support for the original on 10 september 2023 and for the duo 2 on 21 october 2024, three years after each launch and no Duo 3 in sight. that second date is the one historians will use for the death of microsoft's consumer phone ambitions, until microsoft tries again.

in the same window i was carrying a samsung galaxy that cost about a third of the duo 2 and did everything the duo claimed to do, minus the second screen, plus working software. that is not a personal anchor specific to the duo. it is just the global story of the device. the people the duo was made for were already on android or iphone, and the second screen was a curiosity rather than a problem solver.

~ what it actually was ~

the hardware was good in the way surface hardware usually is. the hinge mechanism was clever and the screens were sharp. the device was thinner closed than most flagship phones of 2020. the bezels around the displays were thick, which mattered because the bezels were what made the dual-screen story believable as a productivity surface rather than a folding-phone competitor. samsung's z fold launched in september 2019 with a single folding panel. the duo went the opposite direction with two rigid panels and a gap.

the software was where the device fell apart. microsoft shipped android 10 at launch. the os was a custom build with microsoft launcher and the surface duo dual-screen apis baked in. updates to android 11 took until late 2021. updates to android 12 took most of 2022. by the time the duo 2 had a current android release, the duo 1 was already a year past its last meaningful update. ifixit gave the hardware a 2 out of 10 for repairability.

~ the slide ~

the launch reviews were brutal in a specific way. they praised the engineering and ripped the execution. the camera at $1,399 was worse than a camera in a $400 pixel. there was no 5g and there was no nfc. multitasking across the two screens was clunky in practice even when microsoft demoed it cleanly on stage. the surface team had spent two years building a thing that needed three more years of software to be usable.

the duo 2 in 2021 fixed most of the hardware criticism. it added 5g, nfc, a current snapdragon, a real camera bump, and a thinner bezel. it cost $100 more. by then the conversation had moved on. samsung's z fold 3 launched a month earlier with a working folding screen and a stylus, and the duo 2 was competing against a device category that microsoft had no answer for. sales were not disclosed and were rumored to be in the low six figures globally for the entire duo line.

~ the day the patches stopped ~

microsoft never held a press event to kill the duo. there was no panay keynote and no formal goodbye. the original duo stopped receiving security patches on 10 september 2023. the duo 2 stopped on 21 october 2024 with one last android security update bundle. by then panos panay had already left microsoft for amazon, in september 2023. the surface team that built the duo was reorganized into the team that built the surface laptop 7 and the copilot+ pc line.

the duo became one of those microsoft hardware experiments that never gets a sequel and never officially gets cancelled. it sits in the same shelf as the microsoft kin, the courier, the band, the kinect. the difference is that microsoft was honest about killing those. for the duo, microsoft just stopped patching.
