~ the obit ~
markafoni was the turkish flash-sale site that everyone in tr ecommerce talked about between 2010 and 2014. i did not buy through it personally but the name was unavoidable in turkish tech press through those years. naspers had bought in and afra was on every panel. flash-sale fashion was the model that was supposed to localize the gilt and vente-privée playbook for the turkish market.
the company started in 2008 in istanbul. sina afra, who had come back from a stint in germany, set markafoni up as turkey's version of the timed-discount fashion site. the model ran on short-window sales: members got an email for a brand campaign, the campaign lasted forty-eight or seventy-two hours, the inventory was capped. it worked in turkey for several years.
naspers, the south african media and internet group with stakes everywhere from tencent to flipkart, bought a minority position in 2011 and full control in 2014. the strategic logic was the same logic naspers used to justify the avito buy in russia or the olx buy in latin america. take a number-one position in a local-language market and run it.
~ the rap sheet ~
| Born | 2008 (sina afra founds the flash-sale site in istanbul) |
|---|---|
| Peak | around 2012 to 2013, dominant turkish flash-sale fashion site with a several-million-member email list |
| Killed | 2017-06-30 (naspers closed operations citing a challenging economic environment) |
| Lifespan | nine years |
| Made by | Sina Afra, later acquired in stages by Naspers |
| Killed by | trendyol pulling away on the broader-catalog ecommerce model |
~ the rise ~
between 2010 and 2013 markafoni was the local flash-sale leader. the model lined up with the turkish credit-card culture of installment payments, with checkout pages that defaulted to three or six monthly payments on a single purchase. fashion brands that did not have direct-to-consumer channels in turkey used markafoni's email list to clear inventory at branded discounts.
the site was also the talent pool for a generation of turkish ecommerce hires. people who ran logistics and category management at markafoni in those years showed up later at trendyol or hepsiburada, then at the local arms of foreign retailers. the operational dna of istanbul ecommerce ran through this company for half a decade.
~ the day it died ~
the problem was that flash sales as a category peaked globally around 2013 and then started a slow erosion. broader-catalog marketplaces with permanent inventory and search-driven discovery took over. trendyol pivoted from flash fashion to a full marketplace and pulled away. markafoni did not pivot fast enough.
naspers announced the closure on 1 june 2017 in a brief statement citing the challenging economic environment in turkey and the failure of the business to scale to sustainable profitability. operations stopped on 30 june 2017. the brand was sold to dogan online and remained a dormant url for a while before disappearing from active retail.
~ the inheritance ~
markafoni's death did not slow turkish ecommerce. trendyol became the regional unicorn alibaba bought a controlling stake in by 2018. hepsiburada listed on nasdaq in 2021. the people who learned the operational mechanics on the markafoni floor were running both. naspers wrote the closure off as a single-country bad call and kept its other turkish positions in olx and delivery hero.
the cause of death is worth keeping. flash sales were a real model for a real moment, and that moment closed quickly. companies that read the local market correctly and then misread the category shift went down even with deep-pocketed owners. markafoni was the cleanest local instance of the pattern.
