Bukalapak

2010 - 2025

bukalapak was indonesia's third major c2c marketplace, founded on 10 january 2010 by achmad zaky with two ITB classmates. it scaled into a unicorn behind tokopedia and shopee, listed on the IDX in august 2021 at around $6 billion in the largest indonesian ipo to date, then watched the stock collapse roughly 66 percent within six months. on 9 february 2025 it took the last physical-goods order from the marketplace and pivoted the app to mobile credit and bill payments only.

bukalapak sat in the southeast-asian e-commerce category i tracked from the tech press, not as a user. an indonesian rupiah account, a jakarta delivery address, a vernacular customer-service queue in bahasa indonesia. none of that was ever going to render in ankara. in those days. the name still made it into my orbit because it kept getting filed next to shopee and tokopedia in any indonesian unicorn list i would skim.

achmad zaky started bukalapak on 10 january 2010 in bandung with two classmates from institut teknologi bandung, fajrin rasyid and nugroho herucahyono. the model was the same one tokopedia was running by then: a consumer-to-consumer marketplace where small warung-owners and individual sellers could list goods without the inventory-cost a b2c platform would carry.

the lift came in 2014 with a series-b round and the warung-focused mitra bukalapak program, which let small retailers process top-ups and bill payments through the bukalapak rails. by 2021 the company logged over 100 million users and around 7 million partners. on 6 august 2021 it listed on the indonesia stock exchange as BUKA in the largest local ipo to date, raising about $1.5 billion at a valuation near $6 billion. the stock lost close to two-thirds of its value within six months.

~ how it landed ~

shopee arrived in indonesia in 2015 with a sea-group treasury chest and a free-shipping subsidy that no local unicorn could match for long. tokopedia held the early-mover lead on c2c. bukalapak's wedge was the warung. the small kiosk-shops that serve as the country's distribution backbone, with mitra bukalapak signing them up as payment agents for utility bills and mobile credit.

the warung play was the smartest part of the strategy and the part that ended up surviving. the consumer marketplace was always going to lose a price-war with shopee. the b2b agent network had margin and a moat. in fairness, when the post-ipo numbers stopped working, that was the half of bukalapak the board chose to keep.

~ the day it died ~

on 9 january 2025 bukalapak announced it would phase out physical-goods sales from the marketplace app. sellers were barred from adding new products after 1 february 2025. consumers had until 23:59 western indonesia time on 9 february 2025 to place an order for anything tangible. anyway, unprocessed transactions were canceled by 2 march, with refunds pushed back through bukadompet, the in-app wallet.

the app stayed online. it still does. it just stopped being a place you could buy a phone or a kettle. the surviving product is virtual top-ups and bill payments, the half that mitra built. it is the same brand, the same login, with the marketplace half hollowed out. close enough to a death for a grave entry, given what bukalapak had been since 2010.

~ what got buried with it ~

this part you had to be in the region for, and i was not. what disappeared was the third pole of indonesian c2c. shopee and tokopedia, post-goto merger, now operate as a duopoly across the archipelago's online retail. bukalapak's exit was the cleanest signal yet that a national-champion subsidy model could not hold against pan-regional platforms with deeper capital.

the warung agent network bukalapak built remains the real legacy. roughly half a million small kiosks plumbed into a real-time payments backbone. that infrastructure does not show up on the front page of the app anymore, but it kept the company solvent through the marketplace wind-down. close enough to a survival, if a survival is the part of you that pays the bills.
