Pop Team Epic reached me the way it reached most people outside Japan, as a 2018 anime that behaved like a malfunction, running each episode twice with a different pair of voice actors and packing in gags at a rate that made no allowance for anyone trying to follow. I had no idea it came off a free four-panel comic on a publisher's website. That website was まんがライフWIN, and it closed on 17 October 2025 after sixteen years.
Takeshobo is a Tokyo publisher whose business for decades has been 4-koma magazines, the four-panel gag comics that run in cheap thick anthologies, a form Japanese newspapers have carried since the early twentieth century. In April 2009 it put a web version of that business online in partnership with livedoor, inside a section livedoor was already running called Daily 4-koma. The division of labor was clean: livedoor operated the site, Takeshobo supplied the comics.
It updated every day and it cost nothing. There was no account and no app. The catch was not hidden, and it lived in the archive policy: the first two episodes of any series and its final episode stayed readable indefinitely, while everything in between came down around the time the print volume went on sale. The site was a funnel into books, and the books got their own imprint, Bamboo Comics WIN Selection, launched on 7 June 2010 at 860 yen a volume.
livedoor's Daily 4-koma stopped updating in 2011 and まんがライフWIN outlived its own host. On 1 March 2012 Takeshobo took over full operation and ran the site directly from then on.

~ the one that got out ~
大川ぶくぶ began serializing ポプテピピック on 29 November 2014. It is two fourteen-year-old girls, Popuko and Pipimi, doing nothing in particular and parodying whatever the author felt like parodying that week, drawn in a flat style that looks careless and is not. It spread through Twitter rather than through the site, which is how most things spread in Japan by then, so the site's own traffic was never a measure of its reach.
The 2018 anime made it international. Kamikaze Douga produced an adaptation that refused to behave like one, and it went out over streaming to an audience with no idea a Takeshobo web page was involved anywhere. The comic kept running on まんがライフWIN the entire time.
~ the rest of the roster ~
It was never a one-series site. 森田さんは無口 by 佐野妙 ran there and got its own anime. So did あいまいみー by ちょぼらうにょぽみ, which is about as close as Japanese comics get to a controlled explosion. 胡桃ちの had two series going at the end, and 平尾アウリ published there before 推しが武道館いってくれたら死ぬ made her name elsewhere.
~ the merge ~
The notice went up on 19 September 2025. Takeshobo was consolidating its web comic operation, and まんがライフWIN, WEBコミックガンマ, WEBコミックガンマぷらす and ストーリアダッシュ would all become a single site called 竹コミ!, with the series still running moving across. The last day was 17 October 2025.
WEBコミックガンマ had come out of this site in the first place. In December 2013 the story-manga annex called まんがライフWIN+ was renamed and handed the name of an old Takeshobo print magazine, コミックガンマ, then spun off as its own thing. Twelve years later it went back into the same box as its parent, and both names came off the web on the same day.
Nothing was lost that a publisher would count as a loss. The comics are on 竹コミ! and in print, and the imprint still exists. What ended was the address, and the daily habit of going to it.
