~ the goodbye ~
in 1999 i was on hotmail. still. lycos was a name i recognized, mostly for the search engine and for angelfire under its umbrella. lycos mail was one of the first free webmail services on the open web, launched october '97 out of pittsburgh. i never opened an account. in turkey the free-mail options that showed up in classroom sign-up forms were hotmail and yahoo, with mynet as the local alternative that came later.
the service lived for a very long time. lycos itself was sold to spain's terra networks in 2000 at peak dot-com valuation. it changed hands twice more, through south korea's daum in 2004 and india's ybrant digital (later brightcom) in 2010. through every ownership change the mail service kept running. by the mid-2010s it was mostly a login for a small remnant of long-time users. free tier ended on 15 may '18, cutting off an estimated 90 percent of the account base.
the true end came quietly in 2026. an april server outage took down lycos search along with tripod and angelfire. the mail service was migrated to a partner called exact hosting for a continuity path. by early may '26 the lycos.com mail address had become an archival relic. twenty-eight and a half years for a webmail address is an unusual run.

~ the long tail ~
lycos mail's ability to run for two decades under three different owners came from having no ambition. still. it was not competing for growth. it was not pitched to advertisers as the new hotmail. to be honest. the mail service was a retention hook for whoever owned lycos at the time, kept alive because switching costs for the users who stayed were real. every ownership change treated the mailboxes as inherited furniture rather than a growth vehicle.
~ the day it died ~
the free tier switch-off on 15 may '18 was framed as a business decision. anyway, the announcement said running mailboxes costs money and lycos was no longer earning enough from ads to cover it. free accounts became read-only, then unreachable. premium tier stayed live at $4.95 a month for anyone with continuity needs, mostly small businesses that had used lycos addresses since 1998.
the paid service kept going for another eight years. still. in 2026 an infrastructure failure across the whole legacy lycos property took the search page down for weeks, and the april wind-down announcement covered tripod and angelfire, with the mail addresses caught in the same handoff. the exact hosting migration was billed as continuity but functionally ended lycos as an email brand.
