Looksery

2014 - 2015
dead europe
looksery was a face-tracking app out of odesa that could find and reshape your face in a live camera feed, back in 2014 when phones were barely fast enough for it. it launched in october 2014 and was bought by snapchat a year later for a reported 150 million dollars, the biggest acquisition of a ukrainian tech company anyone could name at the time. snapchat did not keep the app. it took the engine and turned it into lenses, and the standalone product was quietly withdrawn.

i never wore the dog ears. face filters were not a thing i reached for, and by 2015 i was well past the age where pointing a phone at my own face to sprout ears felt like fun. but i work in computer vision now, on the edge side of it, and Looksery is the one piece of the selfie era i actually respect. not the product. the math under it.

Looksery started in 2013 out of Odesa, built by Victor Shaburov and a small team who had been doing real-time video face modification since before phones were fast enough for it. the app landed on the App Store and Google Play in October 2014 and did the thing that looked impossible then. it found your face in a live camera feed and wrapped a moving mesh over it, one you could reshape in real time on a phone in 2014. that was not a trivial trick at the time. it is barely trivial now.

in September 2015 Snapchat bought the company for a reported 150 million dollars, then the largest acquisition of a Ukrainian tech company anyone could point to. Snapchat did not keep Looksery as an app. it took the face-tracking engine and wired it straight into the camera, shipping Lenses within days. the rainbow filter and the dog face that everyone remembers ran on Looksery's mesh. the standalone app was quietly withdrawn. the technology outlived the product by a decade and counting.

so this is a grave for the engine, not the fun. the fun belongs to Snapchat and to everyone who sent a face-swap in 2016. what died here was a Ukrainian computer-vision company that solved a hard problem early and got absorbed whole into a bigger company's camera. from where i sit now, building vision that has to run on real hardware in the field, that is the more interesting half of the story anyway.

~ what got buried with it ~

the odd thing about Looksery is that it did not fail at anything. the app worked and the company sold high. the engineers landed at one of the hottest companies of the decade. what got buried was only the name. nobody says Looksery, they say Snapchat filters. Odesa had a real cluster of face and AR talent in those years, and this was the moment it got a price tag the whole industry noticed.

~ the next chapter ~

every filter that reshapes a face now traces back through this one. Instagram copied it from Snapchat and TikTok copied it from Instagram, and by the end even the video-call apps could put you in a bunny hat. the ancestor of all of it was a small app from Odesa that most people used for a week and forgot. the mesh is still there under the ears, doing the hard part quietly, which is the fate of most good engineering.
