~ the eulogy ~

limitless withdrew from turkey on 5 december 2025. that is the sentence that puts this grave inside the site. seven other regions from brazil to the united kingdom got the same email on the same day. the pendant's cloud service stopped accepting new recordings from any of those regions immediately, existing user data was scheduled for deletion after 19 december. meta had bought the company that morning, the shutdown language went out that afternoon.

the timing landed inside my geography. dan siroker had co-founded optimizely a decade earlier, then started rewind ai with brett bejcek in 2022. the first product was a mac app that recorded your entire screen, indexed the video with local optical character recognition, and let you search back through any moment you had ever looked at. a16z-backed. the pitch was personal memory as a queryable database. i knew of it, i did not run it, the always-on screen capture at that granularity is not a tradeoff i wanted on my working machine.

the pivot to hardware came on 15 april 2024 with the pendant reveal on X. it was a small round device at $99, meant to clip to a shirt and record every conversation the wearer had. over 10,000 pre-orders inside 24 hours, first units shipping to reviewers around late 2024. the value proposition was the same as rewind's: personal memory, queryable, plus AI summarisation on top. the tradeoff shifted from "your screen forever" to "every conversation forever", which was a much larger consent problem.

~ the pendant era ~

the reviews of the shipping unit were mixed. transcription quality was decent in quiet rooms, degraded fast in noise. battery life claim was around 100 hours of standby, real-world usage put it lower. the AI summarisation of a day's captured audio was the actual product feature, less the raw transcript itself. limitless charged a subscription on top of the hardware to run the cloud processing.

the more interesting story was the category. limitless was one of a small cohort of 2024 wearables trying to build "always-on personal AI" as a form factor, alongside humane's ai pin and avi schiffmann's friend necklace. each one had a different failure mode, none of them found a mass consumer market. limitless got closer than most on the specific product-market fit of "record my meetings for me", which was the actual killer feature the b2b market was willing to pay for.

~ the meta absorption ~

meta announced the acquisition on 5 december 2025. the deal terms were not disclosed publicly. the pattern was familiar: acqui-hire of the founding team into reality labs, product line frozen with no new sales. the reality labs division ran the ray-ban meta smart glasses, which had themselves been a slow-burn wearable product and were finally starting to work as a consumer category by late 2025. limitless team plus meta's on-face hardware distribution was the strategic thesis for whoever wrote the memo.

the pendant existing-owner support runs for at least another year from december '25. the unlimited subscription tier went free for those users. the rewind mac app got a hard kill date of 19 december '25, screen and audio capture disabled from that day forward. the regions that got cut off entirely on 5 december (turkey included) got a shorter runway.

~ what got buried with it ~

in fairness, the acqui-hire is not always a death, but it functionally is when the product line stops shipping. limitless is now a talent acquisition inside meta's hardware group. the specific pendant SKU that shipped in 2024 will not have a successor under the limitless brand. whatever meta builds from the team will be a meta-branded piece of on-body hardware inside reality labs, likely arriving as a next-generation smart-glasses variant rather than as another clip-on pendant.

in those days the always-on personal recorder was a category that arrived roughly three years before the consent framework for it had settled. limitless launched alongside humane and the friend necklace into an environment where individual users were legally allowed to record their own conversations in most jurisdictions but the social norm around wearing a live microphone into someone else's meeting was actively hostile. the technology arrived, the manners did not. that is the shape of the death.
