Kwick!

1999 - 2019
dead europe
a south-german social network for teenagers. launched 1 december 1999 in stuttgart, ran for two decades, peaked around 1.5 million registered accounts. the operators announced a shutdown at the end of august 2019 and walked it back the same evening, then transferred ownership offshore in september and went silent in october without a further notice. a stripped-down version returned twice, then went dark for good in 2021.

~ the obituary ~

i did not use kwick. it was a south-german youth social network that never crossed into turkish orbit. the site launched in stuttgart on 1 december 1999 as an internet magazine, and later turned itself into a chat-and-profile community aimed mostly at baden-württemberg teenagers.

jens kammerer started it as an economics-informatics student. benjamin roth came in as co-founder in the summer of 2000. by october 2007 the platform had passed one million registered accounts. peak lifetime registration reached about 1.5 million, a small number next to facebook but a durable one for a regional network running in one language for two decades.

kiwibox.com inc., a us company, acquired kwick in 2011. that was the last change of hands that made obvious sense. the rest of the story is a long slide through offshore ownership and quiet outages, ending in a stuttgart-shaped hole where a social network used to be.

Born1 December 1999 (Stuttgart)
Peak~1.5 million registered accounts by the mid-2010s

Lifespan~20 years
Made byJens Kammerer, later joined by Benjamin Roth
Killed byregional-web decline, offshore ownership carousel, no press release

~ what it looked like ~

the shape was familiar. profile pages sitting next to a private chat window, with star-rated photo albums layered on top. the site leaned into cliques and drama the way regional school communities do, with local dialect showing up in bio fields and a lot of guestbook-style back-and-forth on other people's pages.

this was a common late-nineties shape. it survived the studivz wave, the facebook wave, and the mobile-only wave, mostly because kwick was small enough to stay useful to the people who already had accounts on it.

~ the ownership carousel ~

on 31 july 2019 the operators posted a notice that kwick would go dark at the end of august. the same evening they reversed the decision after user pushback. on 3 september 2019 ownership transferred to a v&m service provider limited registered offshore. by october 2019 the site was permanently down without a further announcement.

it came back on 8 june 2020 in a stripped registration-only mode. on 4 july 2021 a group calling itself combo service provider limited relaunched it with new features. by august 2021 it had gone silent again. as of late 2025 the domain served an apache2 default page. that was the last thing kwick showed the internet.

~ what got buried with it ~

the closure of kwick did not make international news. it did not need to. what it took with it was a specific version of teenage-german-internet life, running in one dialect on one chat interface, that has no direct translation now. that pattern is not rare. every language ran its own version of these networks, and when one of them dies the loss is real inside its slice and invisible outside it.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
