Junction Point Studios
~ the goodbye ~
i knew warren spector through deus ex and system shock 2, not through epic mickey. junction point's name was the first time those two things ended up in the same biography for me. spector had spent the late 1980s and the 1990s at origin systems as a producer on ultima underworld and the original system shock among others, then moved to ion storm austin where he shipped deus ex in 2000 and deus ex: invisible war in 2003. after ion storm austin wound down he opened junction point with art min in november 2004 as a small austin studio meant to keep making immersive sims.
the first commission was from valve. junction point was hired to build one of the episodic half-life 2 extensions for the source engine, the kind of contract project that was supposed to fund a more ambitious original game later. that episode was never finished. valve quietly stopped paying for the work around 2006 and the studio went looking for a new home. disney interactive studios offered to buy the whole company in july 2007 as part of disney's broader push into self-published console games.
the trade was that spector would now make a disney property. the property turned out to be mickey mouse. epic mickey shipped on the wii on november 30 2010 and sold over two million copies. it looked like a real arrival for the studio. the followup, epic mickey 2: the power of two on multiple consoles in november 2012, did not sell, and the wii market it was aimed at was already gone by then. disney closed the studio on january 29 2013 and laid off the entire team of around 200 people.
the closure was effectively the end of spector's mainstream-studio career. he helped establish the denius-sams gaming academy at the university of texas at austin in 2013, then joined otherside entertainment in february 2016 as studio director to work on system shock 3 and underworld ascendant. system shock 3 was eventually handed off to tencent in 2020, underworld ascendant shipped in 2018 to poor reviews. as of 2026 spector is still developing an immersive sim called thick as thieves under megabit publishing.

~ what they actually shipped ~
epic mickey was the kind of game spector signs his name to. that is to say it tried to fit an immersive-sim sensibility into a wii first-party kids' platformer. mickey holds a magic paintbrush that can either paint disney's forgotten characters back into existence or thin them out with the opposite tool. the world is wasteland, a corrupted version of disneyland populated by the abandoned ip oswald the lucky rabbit (the mickey-precursor character disney lost in 1928 and only got back in 2006). the moral system tracked whether you painted or thinned and unlocked different endings.
the underlying ideas were good. the wii motion controls and the in-game camera were not. reviews landed in the 78 metacritic range with the standard "ambitious but flawed" verdict, and the game still sold over two million copies on the strength of the disney brand and the holiday 2010 wii install base. epic mickey 2 added co-op and a singing animation system that the reviews actively disliked. it dropped to mid-50s metacritic and sold under a million across all platforms.
~ the half-life 2 episode that never shipped ~
before disney bought them, junction point was the kind of studio that should have been valve's next external contract partner. the half-life 2 episode they signed for in 2005 would have been the first half-life work done outside valve. by 2006 the project had quietly stalled and valve has never publicly explained why. the most common reading is that the episodic model itself was failing inside valve and junction point's slot was the easiest to cancel without breaking external relationships. that left the studio looking for a buyer, which disney provided in july 2007.
~ what came after ~
spector's post-junction career has been quieter but not over. the denius-sams program at ut austin produced several successful game-design graduates and ran until around 2019. otherside entertainment is still small but still shipping. and epic mickey itself got a switch rerelease as epic mickey: rebrushed in october 2024 from purple lamp studio under thq nordic. it sold reasonably well and reminded a generation of players that the original wii game had existed, which is the only legacy disney's purchase of junction point really produced.
