JPG.STORE

2021 - 2025
dead
jpg.store was the dominant nft marketplace on the cardano blockchain from 2021 through may 2025. it ran the trading layer for ada-denominated jpegs through the entire nft cycle, from the 2021 peak to the long retreat that followed. on april 23 2025 it switched to restriction mode and stopped new listings. on may 23 2025 it shut down for good. the team called it operationally unsustainable. the comet platform died with it.

~ the last words ~

jpg.store was the nft marketplace cardano nft holders actually used. opensea covered ethereum and magic eden covered solana, while the same role on cardano belonged to jpg.store from launch in 2021 through closure in may 2025. the team announced the shutdown earlier in the spring. the marketplace went into restriction mode on april 23 2025, which disabled new listings and offers but kept buying and order cancellation open. on may 23 the website began redirecting to a shutdown notice and the smart contracts stopped accepting new orders.

the reason given was operational unsustainability. nft trading volumes across every chain collapsed after the 2021 to 2022 peak and never recovered to the levels that justified marketplace headcount and infrastructure. cardano-specific nft volume was a smaller pie within a smaller pie. jpg.store ran out of room. the team also closed comet, the related platform, on the same day.

i did not buy nfts on cardano or anywhere else. the only ada i ever held was a small position in 2021 i sold at a loss the next year, and the jpeg trade was something i watched from outside, the way most people who do not buy nfts watched it. jpg.store registered with me as the cardano version of the same shape that had already played out on opensea and rarible. when the announcement came it felt like a delayed echo of a closure that had been due for two years.

~ the early days ~

cardano shipped smart contracts in september 2021 with the alonzo hard fork. the nft trading layer that grew out of that immediately had jpg.store as its center. the marketplace took the standard 2 percent listing fee, supported the cardano-specific cnft format, and built tooling for collection drops and royalties. by 2022 it handled the majority of cardano nft volume. the surrounding cardano community treated it as a load-bearing part of the chain, the way ethereum people treated opensea.

~ the long retreat ~

the broader nft market peaked in late 2021 and started bleeding through 2022. ethereum nft volume fell from billions per month to tens of millions. cardano's tier of activity fell harder because the ada price fell harder, and ada-denominated jpegs depend on ada to mean something. jpg.store kept the lights on for three more years, longer than the rapid 2022 closures, but the math kept getting worse. the team said in the shutdown announcement that they had explored every option before this.

~ the day it died ~

the restriction-mode date of april 23 2025 gave holders a thirty-day window to withdraw assets locked in smart contracts. on may 23 the website redirected to the shutdown page. nfts held in self-custody wallets were unaffected because they sat on the chain, not in the marketplace. cardano nft trading did not stop entirely after jpg.store closed, because secondary aggregators that read the same smart contracts kept working, but the primary venue was gone. jpg.store joined foundation, niftygateway-tier slowdowns, and the longer list of nft marketplaces that ran out of trade.
