Irrational Games

1997 - 2014
dead us
irrational was founded in december 1997 by ken levine and two other ex-looking-glass devs in quincy, massachusetts. system shock 2 in 1999 was the debut, co-developed with looking glass right before that studio collapsed. bioshock in august 2007 was the studio's biggest moment, three million units, a 2007 game-of-the-year. take-two had bought the studio in january 2006. bioshock infinite shipped in march 2013 after a half-decade of production trouble. on february 18 2014 ken levine announced the studio was being wound down, with 75 staff laid off and 15 kept on under his lead in a smaller outfit that became ghost story games.

~ the goodbye ~

the first time i really registered the name irrational was the bioshock launch in august 2007. by then i was in university with ttnet broadband, and the demo for bioshock that came out two weeks before launch was the kind of file that everyone in turkish pc forums passed around. honestly, the underwater art-deco hallway in the first ten minutes was the screenshot that sold every magazine cover that year. the studio's name was on the bottom of the box, next to a take-two logo i did not know much about.

ken levine had worked at looking glass studios in cambridge through the mid-90s, alongside jonathan chey and robert fermier, before the three of them left in 1997 to start their own outfit nearby. the original office was in quincy massachusetts. the first contract was a co-development arrangement on system shock 2 with looking glass itself, which shipped in august 1999, sold modestly, and is now the cult title in the looking-glass lineage.

i was not paying attention through the early 2000s, but anyway, the studio spent that decade on contract work and licensed properties. freedom force in 2002 was a comic-book tactical title for crave and tribes vengeance in 2004 was a multiplayer fps for sierra. swat 4 in 2005 was a tactical police game for vivendi. none of those moved big numbers. by 2005 the original looking-glass spinoff dynamic had faded and irrational was the studio's only label.

take-two bought irrational in january 2006 and renamed it 2k boston after take-two's 2k publishing arm. honestly, the rename held for about four years. bioshock shipped on pc and xbox 360 in august 2007 and sold three million units inside a year, with a 96 metacritic average and the "would you kindly" line that turned into the most-quoted videogame twist of the decade. the studio reverted to the irrational games name in january 2010, with bioshock infinite already announced and the studio sitting on a multi-million-dollar ip.

this happened more in english-language gaming press than where i was at the time. but yeah, bioshock infinite shipped in march 2013 after about five years of production, with at least one major change of direction in 2011 around the columbia setting and the elizabeth ai. the game shipped to a 94 metacritic and around 11 million lifetime units across the rebake and remaster releases. on february 18 2014 ken levine published an open letter on the irrational website saying he wanted to make smaller narrative games with a 15-person team. the rest of the studio, about 75 people, was laid off the same day.

~ the breakout ~

the irrational identity was the looking-glass identity carried sideways. honestly, the design sensibility was a first-person world where the systems mattered more than the script and the script mattered a lot. system shock 2 set the template. shodan as the antagonist and the audio logs scattered through the deck, with the player figuring out the story through indirect evidence rather than through cutscenes. bioshock kept the audio-log model and the systemic-shooter loop and added an art-deco setting with a libertarian-utopia backstory that you read between the lines. that combination did not exist anywhere else in 2007 mainstream gaming.

the bioshock 2 development happened at 2k marin, a separate studio in novato. irrational stayed out of that title and worked on infinite instead. the irrational team that shipped bioshock infinite was about 200 staff at peak.

~ what really happened ~

the february 2014 announcement was framed by ken levine as a creative choice rather than a layoff. the language was about a smaller and flatter studio that could focus on narrative without the overhead of a 200-person aaa team. honestly, that framing struggled to absorb the fact that 75 people lost their jobs and that ghost story games, the 15-person rump, ended up inside take-two on a different floor of the same building.

the bioshock ip stayed at 2k. cloud chamber, a new 2k studio in novato and montreal, was announced in december 2019 as the developer of bioshock 4, which is still in production through 2026. the irrational team scattered across boston-area studios, with several ending up at otherside entertainment, the studio paul neurath had set up in 2014 to make a system shock 3.

~ what replaced it ~

ghost story games announced its first project, codenamed "judas", at the 2022 game awards. the game shipped in spring 2026 after twelve years of development and the previews framed it as a return to the systemic-narrative first-person form that irrational had defined. honestly, "twelve years to ship a successor to bioshock infinite" is a longer cycle than the entire 17-year run of irrational itself.

the irrationalgames.com domain still loads in 2026 as a redirect to ghost story. the bioshock-era forums and the levine open letter live in archive.org snapshots, the only place you can read the february 2014 announcement in its original framing now. "would you kindly" survived into the next generation as a meme well after the studio that wrote it was already gone.
