Threads (Instagram, 2019 app)

2019 - 2021
dead
instagram's first-attempt standalone messenger, tied strictly to your Close Friends list. shipped october 2019 as a private-share companion to the main app, aimed at the same "just my inner circle" behavior that snapchat owned. it never landed. lifetime downloads around 220,000, which is under 0.1% of instagram's user base at the time. wound down 23 december 2021 when meta pulled the ios and android apps and folded the feature back into the main instagram client. not to be confused with the 2023 threads microblogging app, which reused the name for an entirely different product.

~ the obit ~

i missed threads the first time it existed. the wrong reason too. i had instagram open every day in 2019 in ankara, i was 35, edge AI engineer job, married. instagram was my afternoon-scroll app for cat videos and cousin updates. threads shipped in october 2019 as a separate download from the app store, and asked you to log in with your instagram account, set up your close friends list, then use that list as the only recipient scope for anything you shared. i saw the announcement post in the app once and did not download.

the pitch was that snapchat had eaten the "small circle of people i actually talk to" behavior and instagram wanted it back. the close friends list already existed inside instagram since november 2018 as a green-star filter on stories. threads was going to make that list the whole app. you would open threads instead of the camera in instagram. share to the same small group with less friction. status updates auto-generated from your phone's sensor data if you opted in. green heart branding.

the number is the whole story. total lifetime downloads worldwide came to around 220,000. instagram had over a billion monthly actives at the time. that ratio is under 0.1%. meta pulled the app 23 december 2021 after two years of no traction and rolled the features back inside instagram proper. the same name got reused eighteen months later for a completely different product built to compete with twitter.

~ how it landed ~

meta announced threads on 3 october 2019 through the instagram blog. the app store landed globally within days on ios and android. the launch UI had a camera on the home screen and a message thread list below. the assumption was that people would want a smaller-audience app to sit next to the main instagram in the phone dock. auto-status was the novel feature: with sensor permissions enabled, the app would infer your current activity from motion and location and set a text status your close friends could see, updated silently.

the tech press coverage was polite. techcrunch and the verge both wrote it up as a snapchat competitor. reviewer verdicts landed around "why not just do this inside instagram." within weeks the launch curiosity trailed off. the close friends behavior was already available in instagram stories. adding a second app to switch to for the same audience never became worth the friction.

~ the cracks ~

through 2020 the app kept shipping quiet updates. minor ui fixes and a new ability to share to close-friends stories directly from threads. auto-status was scaled back after early privacy concerns. the download curve stayed flat. by end of 2020 the whole close-friends concept had already been absorbed back into instagram: the close-friends selector was one tap from the story camera, and no one needed a second app.

meta did not put many resources into threads. adam mosseri, instagram head, described it in later interviews as an experiment that did not find traction. there was no big shutdown push. the app just stopped getting updates through 2021.

~ the day it died ~

meta announced the shutdown on 8 november 2021 with a short blog post: the app would come off the stores on 23 december 2021, existing users would keep functionality for a short grace window, then be pushed back to the main instagram app to use close friends. no data export was needed since messages already synced with instagram direct.

eighteen months later meta reused the name. threads launched on 5 july 2023 as a text-post microblogging app aimed at twitter, hit 100 million users in five days, and became the fastest growing consumer app in history. same name, no product continuity. the 2019 threads is the grave. the 2023 threads is a different thing that happened to reach for the same brand.
