Horizon Worlds (Quest)

2021 - 2026
dead
horizon worlds on the meta quest headset was zuckerberg's metaverse bet in its purest form, the vr social world the avatar selfie was supposed to sell. it launched december 2021 for quest owners in the us and canada, struggled to keep more than a few hundred thousand monthly users, became a meme about legless avatars, and got pulled from the quest store on march 31 2026 with the headset version fully closing on june 15. the mobile and web app survives. the vr version, the original product, does not.

~ the eulogy ~

horizon worlds was meta's flagship vr social platform, the product the company was pointing at when it changed its name from facebook to meta in late 2021. it launched december 9 2021 for oculus quest 2 owners in the us and canada, expanded slowly, and never broke past a few hundred thousand monthly active users. the version on the quest headset, which was the version the entire metaverse pitch was about, was pulled from the quest store on march 31 2026 and fully closed on june 15. the mobile and web versions still exist. the headset version, the thing that was supposed to be the future, is not coming back.

the famous avatar selfie zuckerberg posted in august 2022 from inside horizon worlds is the cultural memory the product leaves behind. the graphics looked worse than a 2007 wii game and the comments online were brutal in a way that meta clearly did not expect. by then the engagement numbers were already collapsing. wsj reporting at the time said most users opened the app once and never came back, and meta's own internal target of half a million monthly users was missed by a large margin. the product never recovered from being the punchline of its own launch.

i watched the metaverse bet from a distance the way most engineers outside the vr community did. computer vision and the broader xr stack were close enough to my work in turkey that i tracked the announcements, but i never owned a quest, and i never had a reason to put on a headset and walk into a room of legless avatars to attend a meeting. the people i know who did try it described the same thing every review described: a cool first ten minutes, no reason to go back.

~ the bet ~

zuckerberg's october 2021 keynote announcing the name change to meta framed horizon worlds as the canvas the next decade of the internet would be painted on. reality labs, the division building it, eventually accumulated more than seventy billion dollars in operating losses across the metaverse push. horizon worlds was the most visible consumer-facing product that money paid for. the surrounding hardware, the quest 2 and quest 3 headsets, sold reasonably well as gaming devices. the social vr experience the headsets were supposed to make essential never landed.

~ the unraveling ~

by late 2022 meta itself was telling employees the engagement numbers were below internal targets. by 2023 the platform expanded to mobile and web, an admission that the vr-headset bottleneck was killing reach. the mobile version is what survives. it is a flat 2d avatar world running on a phone, which is the opposite of the original pitch. it works because phones are where everyone is. quest headsets are not where anyone is, in the social sense the project needed.

~ the day it died ~

on march 18 2026 meta announced that horizon worlds would leave the meta quest store on march 31 and fully shut down the vr version on june 15. the company briefly walked back the june date the next day to say existing worlds would still be playable, then settled into the line that meta is separating quest hardware from the worlds brand entirely. the vr version of horizon worlds, in the cultural sense, ended on the march 18 announcement. the actual store-removal date was march 31. the headset version no longer exists as a thing you can download.

~ what came after ~

horizon worlds on quest joins altspacevr, sansar, facebook spaces, and a long list of social vr products that could not find an audience in 2d social's shadow. the difference with horizon worlds is the scale of the bet. meta spent more money trying to make this category work than any other company in history. the quest store removal closes the chapter where the bet was about headsets specifically. whatever comes next from meta on this front will be smaller and quieter.
