Happy Farm

happy farm is the original that most of the world only met through its copy. from november 2008 it let chinese social-network users plant crops and, once they ripened, sneak onto a friend's farm at night to steal the harvest. that last part, the stealing, is what made it addictive and famous. it hit 23 million daily players in 2009 and became the template everyone lifted, most visibly zynga with farmville. the studio behind it, five minutes, could not turn the hit into a lasting company, and after years of decline the game was switched off in september 2017.

i met the copy before i ever heard of the original. by the time farmville was showing up in facebook feeds around 2009, i was a computer engineer in my mid twenties, watching a farming game colonize a social network i mostly used for other things. what i did not know then was that farmville was a follower, not a first mover. the real first mover was happy farm, and it was already a phenomenon in china while the western clone was still being built.

happy farm launched in november 2008, made by a small chinese studio called five minutes. the loop was simple and slightly cruel. you planted crops, you waited real hours for them to ripen, and you could visit a friend's farm and steal part of their harvest before they logged back in. the theft turned a quiet solo game into a social one, a reason to check in constantly and a reason to resent your friends. it worked. in 2009 it was pulling around 23 million daily players across chinese platforms.

success did not protect the people who built it. tencent licensed the game and made a fortune from it on its own giant platform, while five minutes struggled to hold together. the studio laid off most of its staff and eventually went into liquidation, with pieces sold off. the game itself lingered for years past its peak before being formally discontinued on 25 september 2017. the genre it invented had already moved on, mostly to phones.

~ the funny part ~

the thing that traveled was not the game, it was the mechanic. crop timers and harvest theft got rebuilt into dozens of titles on facebook and beyond, and for most people outside china those clones were the whole memory. happy farm did not reach turkey at meaningful scale, it reached me only as an origin story i looked up later. the closest i came to it was the western version of its own idea.

~ what survived ~

happy farm settled the question of whether a browser social game could hold millions of people with almost nothing happening on screen. the answer was yes, if the waiting was social and the stakes were your friends. that blueprint outlasted the studio that drew it. every idle farming and city-building game that followed owes something to a chinese game most of its players never knew existed.
